Amane is a woman's name it it means the sound of rain. But since rain falls from the sky, I guess that's why they translated it on that web site in that fashion.

Well, it depends on the kanji doesn't it? The kanji posted above are "ten" from "tengoku" (heaven) and "on" from "onsoku" (speed of sound, for one example). Looks like "sound of heaven" to me I hadn't seen Amane written that way yet though so I'm not really sure. But I've seen it written as �J�� though, in which the first character is rain.

Maybe you were thinking of Amane from With Love whose name meant something with rain (maybe it was the last one, sound of rain)

Actually, while I'm nihonjin, since I'm yonsei I've forgotten the kanji I learned growing up.

What I remember about names, like Amane, is just general knowledge from growing up that my relatives and Japanese school teachers taught.

Hi Matt... the translator you used converted the english sound into japanese sounds. It did that correctly; only thing is, "matsutsu" should be written (in romaji) as "mattsu". The first "tsu" (if it was written in kana) was probably smaller then the second, meaning a short hold of breath. I think Matto sounds better since you don't want to put any 's's in your name.

I always have hard time explaining pronounciations, even though Japanese is not very hard. The "ma" part of "Matto" is like "math" but the "a" is short/abrupt followed by a short hold of breath. The "tto" part is like "top".
The point is, english pronounces "a/i/u/e/o" so weird, compared to the origin (roman latin), that it's so hard to explain. If someone just spoke it out loud for you, you'd had no trouble with it probably.

Actually, I believe the common practice nowadays is to leave Chinese names, as written, alone but pronounce them mostly according to their ���ǂ� (on'yomi). Of course, there are always exceptions. (For example, I believe Jackie Chan mostly goes by the pronunciation �W���b�L�[�E�`�F�� in Japan.)

Examples:

It's not meant to be pleasant; it's meant to be factual. No one is going to be able to decipher whatever mechakucha kanji you decide to use for your name.

I know a fellow who wrote his western name in kanji "so it will be easier for Japanese to read." That is ridiculous beyond belief.

what about �A���h���A (andrea, litt: andorea) a�����@�X�e�t�@�j�A (stefania, litt: sutefania) ? Because some sounds are naturally left out it will sound pretty like the original. If you want a translàted name, you should find the meaning of your name yourself then post it here or use a dictionary. But translating your name doesn't make sense anyway.
