It's not really romantic, but Hotman is a nice family oriented drama.
I don't think she'd be interested in a family drama at this time as she wants something that she can (or wants to) relate to, but thank you for the suggestion. _________________

romantic comedy? i'm not really sure if my recommendations would really fall into that category but for me, they're funny with romantic side... so far, i really enjoyed...
...hotaru no hikari
...love generation (more on love story than on the comedic side)
...nodame cantabile (more on comedy and less on the romantic side)
...proposal daisakusen ( its really funny at first but may get boring at the latter part; but then we have different taste, right? )
heres are my fav jdoramas so far:
~Hana Yori dango 1 and 2
~1 litre of tears
~my boss my hero (i recommend this one for sure xD)
~nobuta wo produce
~Hotaru no Hikari
~Shimokita GLORY DAYS
~Attention please
One of my friends is semi-interested in checking out a Jdrama. She wants something on the romantic, cute side with a happy ending. I don't think she'd be interested in an overly silly drama (that means no HYD). So far, I have Long Vacation and possibly Kimi ga Oshiete Kureta Koto in mind, but I'm open to other suggestions if there are any.
For a quality script and quality acting: Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, Renai Kekkon no Hosoku, Otona no Otoko.
Most of the principal characters involved in romance in all three series are over 30, so if you're looking at teenaged or twenty-something characters, then ignore my suggestion.

Then how about Love Generation? It's got Kimura and Matsu, and honestly, I liked Matsu's character better here than in Long Vacation.
I saw this drama a while back and I agree that Matsu Takako is a lot likeable here than in Long Vacation.

I've seen Kekkon Dekinai & Otona, but not Ren'ai. Is that any good? Oh, and I don't think that the age matters. We're in the same age range as the characters in the dramas you mentioned anyway. _________________

It's a 1999 lighthearted romantic comedy which I think is quite good and oftentimes hilarious. It's got a really solid cast, including some of the best character actors in dorama. If nothing else, it's a chance to see Toshiro Yanagiba in a role completely different from what audiences are used to seeing from him.

What are some good old dramas from the 90's or early 00's?
I like most types of dramas, except the depressing ones where someone is dying. Any recommendations?
You have already seen Long Vacation...
Under one roof (http://jdorama.com/drama.139.htm) is probably the best family drama in the 90s. It had the highest rating before Long Vacation.
Tokyo Love Story is another extremely well-known drama. Most of Kitagawa Eriko's dramas were hits (who also wrote Long Vacation), if you are looking for romance.
GTO, great school drama...
Odoru daisousassen, police drama
HERO, summer snow, Majo no jouken, Love Generation, Kimura Takuya's dramas... There are a lot of great dramas in the 90s. I am watching Ohsama no resutoran at the moment, it's very entertaining too.
