I thought Gokusen 2 was your favorite dorama?

Ooh.. thanks to all who recommended it. I only watched the first episode and I can already see an 8/10. Kudos!

Couldn't watch Orange Days at crunchymunchy or whatever that place is. License.. removed.. grr! I only wanted to watch 1 episode. Well, there goes my sneak peek.

Thanks for the input. I'll give it a spin.

Haha, I have never seen that series and I don't plan to any time in the next decade unless someone sends it in a trade by accident. Then again, I probably wouldn't watch it then either. hehe

hehe

A wise choice. Instead of watching Yukie Nakama as Yankumi I think you should dress like her instead.

Preferences:

wide range of genre from heavy to dark to tearjerker to inspiring to light to comedy and wacky. The catch is, it should be true to the form. If it's heavy it should be heavy. Tearjerker should be a true tearjerker (read: Ichi Ritoru). Wacky should be wacky (read: Nodame) and so forth. The truer it is to the form, the better I'll like it.

I prefer strange female characters most. Nodame and Nobuta are two perfect examples. That probably explains my interest in Tomosaka Rie and Shibasaki Kou characters in Kimi ga oshietekureta koto and Orange Days respectively.

Not interested in GTO since I've read the manga. No favourite actress and actor yet (even though there are many Kimura's drama in my list above).

For tearjerker recommendation, I should inform that the only jdrama that made me shed a tear is Ichi Ritoru.

I saw a glaring omission of a series that you haven't seen that is a must-see: Odoru Daisousasen. While it is an older series, it's a highly regarded one and I'm telling you, the characters will stick with you.

Another recommendation since you said that you like shows that are pretty true to their form, Proposal Daisakusen is another recommendation I'd give purely on the fact it sticks with the 'devoted romance' theme and does it extremely well (not to mention the SP was just released so it's fresh on a lot of minds).

Lastly, as for your questions on the series you're considering:

1 Pound Gospel: Okay, but not the best (6/10)

Utahime: Very unique and entertaining (8/10)

Hotaru no Hikari: Starts slow, ends decently (7/10)

Last Christmas: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, it's even better during the holidays but it's an awesome romance story (the lead for this is the same for Odoru Daisousasen) (10/10)

GTO: Despite the fact you read it, believe me the series itself is done well and does have emotional power behind it (9.5/10)

I don't watch seldom any Tearjerkers so I can't help you on that front, but I hope my recommendations can help you out somewhat.

Oh, it's true to form alright...if the form is insufferable acting by the male lead...if so, then, once again yamapuke wins...

He singlehandedly ruined a show that had a lot of potential...

Just finished Big Wing. It may be a bit cheesy or cliche at times, but I love watching it. I like most of the human stories and I don't think I can get tired of watching Uchida Yuki smiles. It's been a long time since I felt like I didn't want a series to end. So in short, highly recommended. Thumbsup

I'm new and looking for recommendations. At first I looked at the top 50 but from most comment/review, they are all about "...is cute!" ".. is kawaii!" etc. So I'm not convinced. Checked out ratings but then, they can be misleading as well. So I'm hoping for third input i.e. this thread, to combine with the first 2 (and take a ~10mins short peek at Youtube if there's any) and make my mind on which to buy.

Good recommendations are appreciated (preferably drama in the 2000+. It's hard to find older drama here and I don't download).

In case these are of any help, at all:

my 10/10: Karei naru Ichizoku; LIFE; Ichi Ritoru no Namida
my 9.5/10: Long Vacation
my 8/10: Nobuta wo Produce, Nodame Cantabile; Taiyou no Uta (movie)
my 7/10: Hana Kimi; Hana Yori Dango 1 (not interested in HNY2); Engine (I like children ^_^)
my 6/10: Pride; Good Luck; Beautiful Life; Love Generation; Gokusen 1 (not interested in G2); My Boss, My Hero; Taiyou no Uta (drama);
my 5/10: Hero; Mukodono

In consideration:

After reading a few of the last pages in this thread and cross referencing with reviews, I got these on my radar but final decision pending:

1 Pound no Fukuin (too new and I doubt the DVD is out yet); Utahime; Hotaru no Hikari; 14 Sai no Haha; Yasashii Jikan (worry about the slow pace); Boku to Kanojo to Kanojo no Ikiru Michi; Orange Days; Last Christmas; Kimi ga oshietekureta koto.

Overtime interests me a bit but I'm skeptical since it looks like a Long Vacation rip-off. And truth be told, it's not the story of Long Vacation that that push it up from 8/10 to 9.5 in my list. It's the character "Minami" -- an almost perfect albeit fairy-tale-ish 4-in-1 (best friend; litle sister, big sister, GF).

Aoi tori and Hitotsu Yane no Shita 1 interest me the most but alas, it's gonna be hard finding them.

Preferences:

wide range of genre from heavy to dark to tearjerker to inspiring to light to comedy and wacky. The catch is, it should be true to the form. If it's heavy it should be heavy. you give a very detail info about your preference, well actually Beautiful life and Pride is the first and third favorite of mine, but every one does has his own taste.
I also like Karei Naru Ichizuko, its full of emotion and spirits.
I do recommend Orange Days since it's also in ur list, its one of my fave.

the second fave of mine is Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, its a comedy drama..
it is really really really a comedy, it contain no comical things (not like nodame or Hana Kimi, i hate comical drama it suppose to be a drama not an anime),
the story is about a "weird" man, weird in term of his cynical character, antisocial and perfectionist.
In addition this drama won as the best drama of the season and also won on many other catagorizes, best actor, best actress, etc

Hello and welcome, samazing22! Dancing

You must watch My Boss My Hero if you haven't already. An extremely funny school-based drama. You'll love it, I'm sure. Victory! Peace!
