It is.
But it's not your typical romantic comedy.

Doesn't matter, "Out of the ordinary" scripts attract me.
I'm giving this a try.

How true.
Why?
Because:
1. It has an intelligent script
2. It's about real multi-dimensional adults
3. The two lead actors can actually act, really act
4. It doesn't try to prostitute itself to the usual target demographic audience of most dorama
5. Major Tora-san reference in one episode

Yes, I liked Virgin Road. It might be my favorite drama of Mai Hosho. But it's got the most annoying theme song ever. It's the only drama I know of where I fast forwarded thru the opening credits.

MPD Psycho (not for the faint hearted) |
Oh, all of these look good. Thank you! I didn't know that the MPD Psycho manga had been made into a drama, directed by Takashi Miike no less. That's very cool.
I'm also looking for something more on the lighthearted, girly side -- like Kimi wa Pet, Nodame Cantabile, or Seigi no Mikata -- so additional recommendations are welcome.

Perhaps Golden Bowl, Zettai Kareshi and Brother Beat?

Awww, that was Amuro Namie in her heyday. If you saw that drama when it first aired, that song was a huge hit! But I can certainly understand how it got annoying. Like many shows, they played the instrumental version of that song during EVERY episode.
I'm surprised that your favorite drama with Hosho Mai isn't Shomuni.

One other thing I forgot to mention was Tetsuya Takeda as the father, he was great. Esther: Yeah, that was it "Can You Celebrate?" Drove me crazy

KDO is a dorama that grew on me. I still watch it from time to time.

My favourite is Kisarazu but I think most of the dramas are ok except for Jotei and Last friends - a lot of people thought Honey and Clover was boring but I liked it.
As for mystery Maou is probably better that Liar Game (a rather low budget production but it moves fast).
