I don't think so. Lots of dramas are based on manga and anime, they always made special effort to explain the setup or background relationships.
I haven't watched Mei-chan no Shitsuji, but it should be fine.

the stories and characters are so .....unrealistic?
I liked old ones like Asunaro Hakusho, Pride, Tokyo Love Story, Love Generation, etc, but now difficult to watch one completely. Usually drop it after a few eps. Or maybe I am not in the right mood for it.

I like old dramas better too. Normally, I wouldn't recommend Mei-chan no Shitsuji, but someone wrote that it's very similar to HanaKimi, and that's what wildnation really enjoyed. I tried HanaKimi and now I wonder how I endured even 3 episodes before giving up. The most recent drama that I didn't have a hard time finishing was Bara no nai Hanaya.

You could also try Taiyou no Uta, which also stars Sawajiri Erika. I haven't seen the drama but I have seen the movie (Yui is a better singer Wink )

Maybe you can try Akai Ito. It's quite sad but has a happy ending.

I didn't like HanaKimi either, though I finished it. I tried Mei-chan because of the ratings.

I liked Kono Yo No Hate a lot. Looks like I had better follow your list Big Grin
But did you like them all or is that just a list of sad drama's?

I haven't watched about half of that list, including Kono yo no hate, so don't take my word for it. I know they are all sad at times though, some more than others of course.

If you like Kono yo no hate, maybe try some more written by Nojima Shinji. Most of his 90s dramas contain very disturbing elements, I haven't had the heart to try them out.

no problem Smile
thank you for your replies Big Grin

From that list I have seen Beautiful Life. Would recommend that one too. Now you mention it, there many old ones I need to watch yet. But why don't I do that? Too lazy to dig them out of my cupboard?

Does that mean that the J-drama's that are made now are different and less enjoyable?

I like these:

Algernon ni Hanataba o (Great story, even though it's not new)
Beautiful Life (mainly because of Tokiwa Takako)
Ame to Yume no atoni (Father-daughter relationship, and the friendship in it were very moving)
Mahiru no tsuki (Good but I felt distanced from it, perhaps because I'm male)

I found Hoshi no kinka to be frustrating, didn't finish.
Sekaichuu felt like a special drama, but the second half was probably going to too sad for me.

For me they are. I feel the standard of the writing has dropped, and of course the target audience and tone of dramas have changed a lot too. They try to be more light-hearted these days, I think. Great comedy is so difficult to achieve (or maybe my sense of humour is different). But it's hard for any drama to measure up after watching some great classics, so that's part of it too.

What are your favourites? I am running out of ideas/prospects these days.

glad and sad that you are confirming my fear that current J-drama's are...different. And also true, when you have watched something really good, difficult to be happy with something less.

I haven't watched that many J-drama's, because I have watched more K-drama's. So, I may be not much of help to you. When I am bored with k I try a J-drama and the other way around.

The ones I liked so far, out of the top of my head:

Asunaro Hakusho
Kono Yo no Hate
Tokyo Love Story
Love Generation
Pride
Kimi wa Petto
Beautiful Life (especially the end)
Long Vacation
Koi no Chikara
Million Stars Falling from Heaven

Haven't explored this thread yet, but what are your favs? If you have listed them already somewhere here, don't bother to reply, I should be able to find them, ne?

Just finished watching "Mei-chan no Shitsuji."
It didn't fail to make me laugh and enjoy the drama.

This is my second drama after "Hana Kimi."
Both were great.

Can anyone suggest another one similar to the two?
Any info on this would be great.

Sorry, didn't see this before. All of your favourites are romance. hehe I like them too, but not as much. Have you watched Orange Days? It's really good too. And Say you love me with Tokiwa Takako. I haven't watched this one but it should be good too. And then there's Summer Snow, although the romance is not as prominent in this one.
Oh, Kimi no Te ga Sasayaite Iru (aka From the Heart) Thumbsup
and Majo no jouken if you don't mind teacher-student relationship

My favourites are usually family or human dramas. Hitotsu yane no shita 1 is my absolute favourite. You can click on my profile to see others, although the scoring is inconsistent.
