Sounds like it's time for a moderator to lay down the law and start the wrecking ball to this thread.
BAMMM!!
There was no clear forum rule on this issue, but if a moderator deemed it inappropriate and delete it, that's fine with me.
Nevertheless I find your response and use of this particular emoticon in this case a bit frivolous. We are trying to strike up a serious discussion on a topic arising from a Jdorama - Nodame Cantabile. The moderator may have to delete this thread but that would be because the 'law' was not clearly laid down in the first place, not because the contents of this thread are inappropriate in any way.
By no way, shape, or form is it inappropriate... It just seems redundant.
If the focus is on Nodame then that thread should be used, if it's about music in general, then that's something else.
It was suggested by one of the other moderators that the "What Are You Listening To?" thread be renamed to be a general music discussion thread which will encompass ALL genres and not be genre-specific......

That seems reasonable...
If that is done, we'll have to see how such a thread will evolve and how it will be used ( or abused )... _________________

I think musical discussions will come up along with popular dramas or other entertainment forms.. but on their own, musical pieces will probably not be a focus of discussion. I think a general "What are you listening to" thread is sufficient. _________________

The current one is a bit of a mess, and I admit to contributing majorly to that mess...but in my own defense, of late I've been adding some comments, rather than just posting artist/song... _________________

Hence the power of the search engine. I don't think people are likely to go looking through the history of the "what are you listening to" thread. It's mostly a personal sounding board rather than a long term interactive discussion. Discussions happen in a short time frame and then people again post random trivia of their listenings when they see fit. I don't see a problem with that, personally. _________________

I've tried to instigate some conversation in that thread, but it typically gets swamped out by the others posting song after song...
Maybe changing the title will change some of that.
Also, their is a Japanese Music thread in the J-Ent forum, so maybe that part of "What you're Listening to" should be redirected over there and non-Japanese music can be discussed in the renamed thread...
Btw.. sorry to get into this late.. but damn... great choice. I'm a huge Ralph Vaughn Williams fan and I've always loved that piece! His March of the Kitchen Utensils is pretty cool too. And who could ever argue with English Folk Song Suite! (I've probably played it in 5 different ensembles)
That being said, I'm a big contemporary classical fan. It's not for everyone. _________________

No, you're totally right.. many movie/game/tv show composers employ contemporary elements. I think that that is one reason that people think of them as themes instead of entire works. Everyone knows the "Jaws theme".. but the best part of the work is definitely to be found outside the well known contrabass part.
From my training the hallmarks of contemporary classical music are these:
Repeating Melodic Fragments
Percussion as a discreet melodic section
No key or constant key changes
Constant Meter change
Extremely varied dynamics
Disonance much more widely employed, often without resonance
This is exactly what movie composers do. They want to create themes which are evocative of a certain behavior or character or situation. Everyone can think of the music that signifies that Darth Vader is coming...
The challenge is that many people don't consider these to be compatible with their perception of "music". My father never appreciated that a soundtrack could be standalone work, whereas I have a vast collection of movie, anime, game, and television soundtracks.
Most popular music doesn't abide by contemporary hallmarks (there are a few - The Mars Volta and System of a Down come to mind - both groups I love) and often is structured like classical era music or early romantic era. _________________
