Yup, I saw that searching around for reviews... Looks to be the front runner...

I'd really like to shrink my disc collection. But maybe I should wait for the prices to come down and the speeds to get faster. |
Elt just bought an NEC DL writer, but I don't know if he's burned any DL discs yet...
Or are you talking about a DL recorder? I'm not sure if something like that exists yet...
Anybody?

No no, I meant "writer", sorry. Yes, it would be for my computer to do backups. Dual-layer would be very nice.

Yeah, it would be, but DL discs must be pricey right now.
I just use DVD+RW discs and a program called Simply Safe Backup.

Yup havent burned any DL disc yet, mainly cause I dont want to buy the expensive media yet, lol
As for DVD recorder, I have a Panasonic EM-55 or something like that and it's wonderful so I'd recommend Panasonic to anyone

I think BMW means the standalone type and I believe we have a thread for DVDRW (computer drives) somewhere, so let's refrain from discussing burners in here.
So far as I heard, Panasonic is one of the better ways to go. I'm still waiting plus I'm still broke. But, from what I noticed some of the older DVD players or certain makes are picky with reading the resulting disks from Panasonics, but it's pretty rare. But generally they are good even if recorded at high speeds (can fit more content). If I were to buy one it would probably be Panasonic.
But, I want one of the ones with the hard drive built in. If you have an outage (cable, channel, electricity, etc) and you are recording straight to disk, wouldn't that be a waste of a disk? ;__; Unlike VHS tapes, unless you use DVD +/- RW you can't reuse them if somethng messes up If I got the regular, I'd have to get a ton of RW's

Right you are, K.
DVD Recorders are standalone DVD burners with a TV/cable tuner, sorta like a VCR.

DVDRs with a HD built in are really pricey, on the order of $400-$500, I think... I'm gonna strictly use RW media, so I don't waste discs and then I can edit (the commercials mainly) and re-author the disc...
Costco didn't have the Panasonic, but they had a LiteOn model for $150... I'm a little leery of the LiteOn after seeing all the complaints at videohelp.com about the lack of support and firmware updates...
The best online price for the Panasonic DMR-ES10 is $175 so far...

Uh, did you read any of the previous posts?
We're talking about standalone Recorders, not PC-based Writers....
Gomen.

Standard? Don't thay all record in MPEG2 format?

I Sony has something like Blue Ray and Tohsiba's using their own, HD-DVD.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD-DVD
I think the MPEG2 formats for recording will die out soon. On th elong run, IMO, it's better to wait for a standard there, because if you're unlucky, you buy a Blue-ray and then HD-DVD is the standard in the end and then you r blue-ray recorder breaks, you buy a HD-DVD and then you can't watch your blue-ray discs, just like it was with VHS and Beta (which also record in a similar encoding, but just the format of the medium and the recorder is quite different).
Imagine, with a dual layer blue-ray you could store some 50 GB data. *DROOL!!!!*
Hitachi, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and Zenith are already selling blue-ray recorders (I don't want to think of the price though lol). The PS3 will also support it.

I agree VHS is versatile, except it's linear (no random access) and the tapes wear out. I am currently transferring my VHS tapes to DVD, and the quality has shown signs of degradation.

That's exactly what I want to do as well once I get a recorder. Especially since I have movies on tape which are impossible to get on DVD lol. Like... the original Star Wars trilogy (the original original one, unedited) and a few Japanese movies impossible to get.
