I edit everything via the computer. With the help of an incredible proggie I found, editing mpeg2/ac3 files are easy.

I HATE editing on the Panasonic, since you are limited to a remote.

I rarely record anything to XP (My panasonic goes by XP, SP, LP, EP, FR for recording modes). I'm satisfied with just SP.

The Hard drive models suffer this quality loss as groink as mentioned. If you record on the HD, then transfer to a DVD-r, supposedly its analog and not digital. This is what I read awhile back... I'm not sure about the newer models though.

Cool, do you need to demux the ac3 from the video before you edit?

The lowest setting I use is LP, and that's for content that is already less than perfect. I figure the extra pixellation isn't that bad.

That's terrible if they do a digital->analog conversion before burning to disc. Shake Head

Nope. I import the files via TMPEG DVD author, then run the .mpg files through the proggie. Just snip snip and finished.

Yeah, TMPGEnc DVD Author is what I use as well, but if you need to manipulate the audio (increase/decsrease volume, etc.) then you have to demux things, make your adjustments, then multiplex again... Not always necessary, but a little tedious when you do have to do it.

I am in so much trouble.

I just bought a Panasonic ES10 (don't feel responsible dochira. It was the one that had at Circuit City in my price range, so I would have picked this one out even if you hadn't endorsed it. Though your endorsement makes me feel a bit better.)

Anyway... I bought it... I just read the last few comments from Amrayu, dochira, and BMW, and I don't have the first clue what you guys are talking about.

I'm not even gonna take it out of the box until Saturday.

One nice thing. If I still haven't figured it out in 30 days... I can take it back.

Tsk tsk tsk.... Shake Head

I can't believe that you haven't taken it out of the box... If I bought that fool thing, it would be set up and ready to go before my garage door finished closing... Beaten hehe

Hey, I'm taking this a step at a time.

First you buy the bugger.

Then you mull.

Then, when you get the courage up, you start sticking plugs in places.

Actually, since I have a clue about VCRs, I got a replacement VCR and DVD player for the back room. (Nieces and nephews sort of beat the old units to a pulp over the last two years.) So I did unbox those and hook them up.

Do I get any credit for that?

Now... what's this DVD RAM business you're talking about?

Open the box and read the manual... Mr Green

Seriously, the DVD-RAM disc is like a DVD-RW disc, but apparently can be rewritten around 100K times as opposed to 1000 times for a DVD-RW disc... Also it appears that the DVD recorder is optimized for a DVD-RAM disc, offering more editing and other features than a DVD-R/RW disc would allow...

The main catch? Your PCs DVD reader/burner might not be able to read the DVD-RAM disc, so you can't copy, edit, etc. the data...

@Geezer: I understand the hesitation, but like you said, you have 30 days before you're stuck with the thing.

@bmwracer: This Google-man is a great character. w00t! That is a great guide and since I bought the A09 today, I will probably get my feet wet with DVD-RAM.

I might be gettin' my feet wet this weekend as well: I'll drop by Circuit City after I watch Episode 3 again (takin' Friday off hehe )... Rolling eyes

Dochira:

Re: Groink's quote about DVD-RAM vs. DVD-R/RW

What was the date of that quote? What he stated might've been true at that particular time, but now that issue might not be true anymore...

Been searching and haven't found anything backing up his commentary... Sweat

Not exactly sure. He sent me a PM at d-addicts. He gave me permission to reprint it here. He did say he had the older Panasonic E85 with HD though. Maybe it doesn't apply in newer models. Not certain, however.

Sweat I've never had to demux anything in TMPEG DVD author. Smile
The other proggie that I mentioned was VideoRedo. I use it mostly for editing stuff that I've recorded on my Panasonic. VideoRedo produces a file that is ready to go into TMPEG DVD author.

My Panny doesn't record onto DVD-rw, but I'm guessing that the disc needs to be finalized. So... all the properties of DVD-r would apply to DVD-rws (except the erasiblity part).
DVD-ram is VERY different. If you ever looked at one, you can see the disc surface is very strange. Reading a DVD-ram disc on the Panny is relatively fast compared to DVD-rs. Editing and formatting is also very fast on DVD-rams.
Here's some major advantages of a DVD-ram disc vs. DVD-r (I'm assuming DVD-rw has the same properties as DVD-r):
1. Disc recognition when you first pop it into the Panny, is fast!
2. No need to finalize.
3. Fast seeking time (for editing, etc)
4. Durability, and excellent quality!!
5. Formatting a disc takes 4-5 seconds.

Just curious, have you cracked the seal on the DVD recorder, Geezer?

amrayu

VideoRedo. Thank you.

And BMW, thanks for that link.

Well, I opened the box this morning, and the recorder comes with a DVD RAM disc... it's just sitting there right on top.

So I guess I'll get to start futzing with the thing tomorrow.

See? I have a system. Yesterday I bought it. This morning I opened the box and looked inside.

Tomorrow I'll force myself to take the bugger out of the box.

(This is why people like me need a full 30 days.)

I admire that you have the fortitude to resist simply tearing that box apart. Like bmw, I think I had the box opened as soon as I reached my car. Sweat Beaten

dochira

I do that with tools. I do it with books.

But if the word "electronic" is in any way associated with a device... I tend to think of it as a rattle snake.

Guh, dopped by the Circuit City after watching Episode 3 and found out that they jacked the price to $199.99... Grumble

Bastards.

Might as well buy it from Best Buy for $189.99 now... Sweat
