u play guitar in ur band?

Yup...I'm currently lead, but the other guitarist is working his hardest to dethrone me. Its funny...sort of a rivalry...We play so different too....I like to play with more style to songs while the other guitarist is constantly trying to keep everything on exact rhythm. And he has a teacher while I have to teach myself...we're so different.

.

Ne, ne!!
I've a few question(for everyone)
is it hard to play the guitar?
I play the electone/organ & can play the piano too.
I guess I'm certified to teach the electone..
I've never liked guitars, but have been inspired to take it(guitar)
or bass up after seeing Tetsu & Ken.

So I was figuring I might make the guitar
a 2nd or 3rd instrument.
Now, main question; should I start on an acoustic guitar
or on the electric?
And would my keyboard background be of any help?
Thankies!!

I also had a background in piano first and its really only useful for music theory. My friends keep pushing me into getting a guitar teacher because it'll help you play properly, but the guitar is best enjoyed while you learn on your own in my opinion. Its surprisingly a simple instrument to play....everything you hear on guitar usually ends up being easy to play but sounds difficult with a few exceptions (like Led Zeppelin sounds easy but then you realize its somewhat difficult). I find it easier to play than piano because there's less multitasking. Don't get me wrong though, you'll hate playing guitar when you first start out...it'll be the biggest pain in the butt...your fingers will hurt and harden....and unless you're determined you'll probably end up not getting far. It only becomes fun when you finally learn how to play real songs (not just chords) but once you reach that stage the guitar is way easier to play than piano. Bass is basically the same thing except bass is way easier to play. In Tetsu's case though he plays a bass like a guitar so if you want to play his style learn to play guitar first i guess. Bass also requires longer fingers since the frets are more spread out. That should help. I've been learning for like a year and a 3/4 and I can play solos by Ken already.

okay, so it's the elcetric for me!
Think I'll be able to play chords in 3 months time with a teacher?
So, how exactly do you learn by yourself?
I know how to pluck, but not how to strum.

Will my fingers be callused?
O.o
It won't hurt my keyboardign will it?
If i put cream on it, will it affect my guitar playing
as you know, you develop calluses(do you?)
and with the cream it..
>_<
Sorry.. must be confusing..

the callouses will be your best friends, because when you're first starting out guitar strings hurt like crazy.

Yup Karasu is rite. Callouses are a big part of guitar playing. When I first started I made a really dumb decision by not learning how to use a pick but instead using my fingers for everything (since I always kept losing picks) but turns out playing strickly with fingers has a lot of advantages, but I still prefer picks since I can play faster and it becomes easier if you're trying to play fast. Callouses will form on your fretting hand so if your right-handed it'll be on your left. It won't hurt your keyboarding skills but if you don't do it properly it can severely deform the tips of your fingers. Cream will mess up the guitar strings I think and if you really don't want callouses then you shouldn't learn guitar. You do however get less callouses on bass because my friend hates callouses too and he says he just (i know this will sound gross) rips them off as soon a possible and lets his fingers heal. In 3 months you can play chords no problem I'd think...especially with a teacher, but I still find that your creativity gets decreased with a teacher's help. I haven't heard a teacher-taught guitarist that I really liked in terms of songwriting (well maybe except Ken if he was taught), but that's just my personal opinion. You can very easily learn everything you want to know about guitar off the internet (self-taught). It just takes more will power since people won't be forcing practise on you and you basically motivate yourself. Whoa there I go writing an essay again...lol.... Big Grin ....O also a lot of the best guitarists in the world (jimi hendrix, jimmy page, slash, kurt cobain, etc.) were self taught just getting books and stuff so you decide whether you need a teacher or not since not having a teacher could save money.

Nah, I'll only apply the cream AFTER I'm done with playing.
So, he rips them off eh?
*muses*
Does he still need to rip them off now?
Maybe I should..do that.
It'll be smooth when it heals right?

How..will the callouses look like?
I'm definitely going to take up the elc. guitar,
I just want to know what I'm in for.

So, using a pick is important?
How exactly does on'e creativity get decreased with a teacher?
Thankies!
You're such a help!

Most people won't even know you have callouses because it pretty much looks the same unless you constantly cut ur skin on the strings then when it heals it may look improper. It's kind of like your regular fingers but slightly shinier and people will only know you have callouses if they touch your fingers or play guitar themselves and can tell. Personally I don't know why my friend (he's a bassist by the way) rips them off. I find callouses useful. Now I can carry a hot bowl of noodles no problem Bleah Using a pick or not using a pick is personal preference and style. If you plan on playing rock you'll need a pick, if you play on playing classical or stuff which seems like multiple things are going on (like Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven, Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven, and the ending theme to Chrono Cross) you'll need to learn to use ur fingers and eventually nails or picks which fit onto your fingers. That style is called finger picking and it was what I started out with. Creativity being lost is only an opinion and not fact. I just find I really like guitar playing of self taught people rather than people who are taught. People who are taught tend to focus on speed over style in my opinion and these people usually end up going into heavy metal music (like Metallica and stuff) which I find not very creative. This most likely happens because a lot of guitar teachers are heavy metal freaks and are obsessed with it so they teach other people and eventually you get a bunch of metal heads (like my two bandmates who got lessons). Its just my opinion though so whatever...take it as you like. Member though that callouses are better left alone than trying to be gotten rid of while you play guitar. I'm sure even a guitar teacher will preach that.
