i was watching naruto, and i just noticed...does he talk like how a female would talk? like his sentences end with "wa yo". i was taught that females talk like that and guys end with "da yo"

I just learned this so I might be able to provide some help. Basically, da yo is the short or informal form of desu yo when the word before it was a noun or a "na-adjective". Not too sure about the wa yo though...

And if you notice, Naruto says (datte) ba yo at the end of his sentences. hehe

@this quote is actually supposed to quote the original question poster@

using 'wa' as end particle makes u sound very femaleish. If you're a guy u shouldn't use it. Examples of feminine way of speech vs masculine:
Sou desu wa yo! vs Sou desu yo! = that's right! (so it is)
Ii (wa) yo! vs Ii da yo = it's alright
Iku wa. vs Iku zo (not entirely sure if these are synonyms. otherwise Iku yo) = let's go (we're goin')

I don't know what Naruto's "-bayo" means but in case you didn't know yet, it's interesting to know tht his voice is being done by a woman Nut

btw; once I thought you could just add many of these particles at the end of a sentence, without changing the meaning. My Japanese teacher responded: "Ending particles are like spices for your sentence. If you use too much, it will taste bad." Mr Green More seriously - he also said that each particle changes the naunce of a sentence so using alot will just confuse the listener. About 3 is probably max.

This is mostly correct except that there is an exception.

In general "standard" Japanese, "wa" is considered feminine when used as an emphasis with or without a trailing "yo" for emphasis. However, many 'dialects' of Japanese, particularly notable in the Kansai area, do not follow this. "Wa" is not feminine, and the "standard" Japanese "na" for males (usually "ne" for both sexes) is very acceptable for both sexes to use in Kansai-ben (Kansai area 'dialect').

"Ja, iku wa"......... in "standard" Japanese would sound feminine.
However, other 'dialects' of Japanese are perfectly fine, and are sexless.
("Well, I'm going")

"Sou yo na!" ...........in "standard" Japanese, this would be slightly masculine.
However, other 'dialects' of Japanese are neutral in meaning and can interchange with "ne" instead of "na."
("That's right, isn't it!")

Very good! Big Grin

There are a few people who may be able to help you. But not on a normal basis, however. But I am sure they can help you when they can.

Now, I'm taking Akakage's que, and moving this topic over to the suggested topic.
