True. I remember the Bay City Rollers guys had to take lessons on how to speak Americanised English because a lot of people outside of Scotland couldn't understand their thick Scottish accent. There's a Scottish television comedy show here, I think it's called Still Game, and the producers wanted to start showing the program in America and other parts of Europe but they wanted to change the accent so that the characters could be easier understood. That didn't go too well with some of the Scots here...I think it came down to a matter of National pride. It's a comedy about people and life in Scotland...why change it? That sort of thing.

as for the Asahi campaign i heard next year during Seiji no hi when the youngsters turn hatachi they're going to have several kegs of beer on tap at Meiji Jingu so they can do beer bongs right there in the temple complex.

I thought temples were places of worship...so are they encouraging drunken revalries at the temples now? Japan is sure changing if that's the case...

Protective effect from alcohol seen in head injury

By Will Dunham

Alcohol is to blame in many accidents that cause major head injuries, but it also might help people survive after they get hurt, researchers said on Monday.

Researchers examined data on 1,158 patients treated at a Toronto hospital for severe brain injury due to blunt trauma from 1988 and 2003.

Those with blood-alcohol levels up to 0.23 percent -- nearly three times the common legal limit of 0.08 percent -- were 24 percent more likely to survive their injuries than patients entering the hospital with no alcohol in their bloodstream, the study found.

But patients with even higher alcohol levels in their blood were 73 percent more likely to die than those with none, the study also found.

Dr. Homer Tien of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center and the University of Toronto, who led the study, emphasized that these findings should not be interpreted as endorsing irresponsible actions like driving after drinking.

Rather, Tien said, they point to the possibility of developing a drug to give to brain trauma patients after injury to improve their odds of surviving.

"We don't have anything that we can give to head-injured patients as a drug. So this raises an interesting possibility," Tien said in a telephone interview. "Perhaps alcohol has some beneficial effects for head injury -- after injury."

"But by no means are we advocating that there's any advantage to drinking and then driving or drinking and doing anything that may get you into an accident because your chances of getting into a fatal accident are much higher," Tien added.

The findings were published in the journal Archives of Surgery.

The researchers suggested that alcohol at low or moderate levels in the bloodstream may protect against secondary brain injury that happens when traumatized brain cells remain starved of oxygen, exacerbating the damage inflicted by the original trauma.

Most of the patients who had alcohol in their bloodstream had been involved in vehicle accidents.

About 28 percent of them who arrived at the hospital with a blood alcohol concentration of up to 0.23 percent died, while 36 percent of those with no alcohol died, the study found.

By way of comparison, the study also looked at 528 patients with severe torso injuries but no or insignificant head injuries, and found that blood alcohol levels were unrelated to their survival rates.

The researchers noted that drinking alcohol, by impairing motor skills, reaction time and judgment, is the most important personal risk factor for fatal injuries, contributing to about a third of all deaths from injury in vehicle crashes, falls and other circumstances.

Quote:
Aberlour a'bunadh is a natural single cask strength malt whisky. Taken directly from specially selected sherry casks it is bottled as simply as possible without the use of modern filtering methods or the addition of water.

The three main characteristics that distinguish Aberlour a'bunadh from the other single malts are:

Original Cask Strength means that the whisky is bottled at the strength of the cask, which in the case of the first batch of a'bunadh is 59.6%. Not diluted, the whisky possesses a greater aromatic complexity. Most malts of the old days were cask strength.

Not Chill-filtered. Today most malt whiskies are chill-filtered to prevent the whisky becoming cloudy when adding water or ice. This process, which did not exist in the 19th century, removes some richness and mouth feel as well as some fruit and sherry character. Aberlour a'bunadh is a true replica of the old days' malts.

Only the best Sherry Butts, which previously held oloroso, have been selected by Douglas Cruickshank, Aberlour's Distillery Director. These casks are the rarest and the most precious used for whisky maturation. Again, they were used in the old days when sherry was imported from Spain in casks which were then left empty sitting in UK ports or ships.

Actually sounds like really nice Whisky...but I'm not going to try it. Mr Green

Milk destroys health benefits of tea: study
Tue Jan 9, 6:59 AM ET

Bad news for Britons: adding milk to tea ruins the health benefits of the drink, according to a Germany study.

Tea has complex compounds called polyphenols which are believed to help the arteries to relax or dilate, thus enabling a smoother flow of blood.

Scientists led at the Charite Hospital in Berlin tested black Darjeeling tea on 16 healthy women volunteers aged more than 50, placing an ultrasound probe on their forearm to measure arterial response.

When the women drank half a litre (0.9 of a pint) of tea, their arteries relaxed significantly more than when they drank hot water or tea with milk -- tea in which skimmed milk, comprising 10 percent of the drink's volume, was added.

The results were confirmed in lab-dish tests on rat aorta.

The study, which appears online in the European Heart Journal, points the finger of blame at three casein proteins in the milk. These are thought to adhere to a kind of polyphenols known as catechins, preventing them from carrying out their health-making work.

This could explain why Britain, a nation passionate about tea-drinking but where almost everybody adds milk to their cup, fails to make headway against cardiovascular disease, said researcher Verena Stangl.

The study did not cover green tea, which is widely drunk in East Asia -- without milk.
