Things were going so well in this drama 'til the cliche arrival of the old boyfriend ep. The whole thing was so stupidly predictable - especially the part with them missing each other at each others' place. Jdramas can be so cookie-cutter sometimes.

And they were doing so well!! Shake Head

I hope they play it off in the next episode and somehow tease the cliche - that would make it better.. but short of that, it'll cost the drama a couple of review points.

I've been back-reading the last few pages and chuckling like crazy. Wish I could've joined in, but I think I missed the boat by a couple of years. Beaten

The GIF was the wrap up after the last episode. Kimura was meeting and greeting all the cast and hugging them all...not just his leading lady. I imagine by that time she was already involved with her Ichkawa guy and had the necessary situation for the shotgun wedding. But he never stopped his womanizing so she divorced him. She was a very strong lady and got complete custody of her son and the house etc and financial settlement. Don't mess around with a woman scorned if her name is Takeuchi Yuko.

I loved PRIDE and introduced several drama people to Kimura san and they all fell for him and his charms and loved PRIDE.
At this same time Kimura was flying between Japan and Hong Kong doing his short role in "2046" the Wong Kar Wai film. He was quite exhausted and it shows in the very last scene at the skating rink. Face looks very tired I think.

*raises hand sheepishly* Beaten (Peggy, have I ever thanked you enough? Kiss)

Yeah, I heard about Yuko's messy custody battle with Kabuki Idol. But I can just imagine how the guy's powerful theater clan must have closed ranks around him. That Yuko is one tough cookie! Bow

Oh, you're right, Kimura was doing 2046 around this time (same haircut, hehe). And I agree, he looks a bit drawn in the final episode. (But apparently not too tired to give his leading lady a nice long squeeze! Mr Green)

Sort of sad about Takeuchi Yuko really. Her MIL was highly delighted with her and loved having the grandson. He would be the next to go into Kabuki as the next generation. wonder what will happen now.

Another Kabuki family leader..friend of Kimura....
Ichikawa Somegoro who was in PRIDE (the rich illegitmate role) introduced his son into their Kabuki family on stage last year. There is a nice photo of the three generations in their robes. Boy was youngest child to enter the Kabuki theatre. Long lineage.

Somegoro(Kabuki name) is brother of Matsu.....It's all very interwoven...

This is very interesting bio of Matsumoto.

Peg

PS EG just posted after your eleven photos. Wonderful effort..you make it all so easy girl.

Gaijin..

YES INDEED!!! Have that one and loved it. What a wonderful piece of acting in that very odd sort of role. He was so perfect when he presented his tea ceremony despite not wanting to carry on the family traditioin.

Never get tired of seeing that production.

Peg
Have to say also that his moment of truth on the rooftop in PRIDE when he tossed the money to the wind was very powerful for his character.

It rounded out his pain and misery without any words.

@ Peggy - Sankyouuu for dropping by! Kiss I wish there could've been more photos (only 11? with the gifs I counted 13, I think Sweat), but I couldn't find that many floating around. A photo of the couple riding the Zamboni would've been great. Or a shot of Halu and that orange lamp. But that's okay. Mr Green

Holy moly, the Kabuki family names can be confyuuuusing! Each clan is a veritable dynasty, like the Ptolemies and the Ramas and the Zorros of history... (okay maybe not the Zorros Beaten) Interesting info, though. Thanks for sharing. Smile

Tomo was my fave Blue Scorpion next to Halu. Ichikawa pulled off that scene on the rooftop really well, and it's a shame that Nojima Shinji didn't develop the character enough.

@ gaijinmark - The BRAND premise does seem mighty interesting. Hmmm... *twirls nonexistent mustache*

E.G.

'BRAND' is definitely worth your while. Somegoro plays a strange role really. You would think that he should be much more officious since he is who he is in a great family in the drama. However, he has obviously been searching for a different life, and in doing so he learned that acceptance does not mean weakness. He goes through life making a clear trail and eventually ends up where he should be, and eventually where he wants to be.
Very interesting writing and he is the actor to grasp it all and show the inside story of a man.
Well I guess it's all that Kabuki training applied to the screen.

I sure did! Wink

@EG-Brand is one of my all time favorite dramas.
The contrast between the high fashion world and tea cermonials is engrossing and the leads are terrific. Victory! Peace!

I am too tired or lazy right now to look up Kabuki. I think it can't go back more than the Tokugawa days towards the end. It began because they had too much trouble when they had women playing roles in the theatre. Too many admirers and it developed into a sex trade. So they stopped that and that's why men began to play the women's roles. Of course then the charming young actors became the target for admirers. Shake Head

I don't think women were even allowed in the audience at one time.
It's a very interesting subject to look up because there is so much to read and many links to side issues.

Now of course it is a very admirable side of the theatre and depends on family lineage to a great degree. The actors work very hard from childhood to learn everything about the stage and how it al works, quite apart from the acting side of things.
