Couples get married on the 80th floor of the Empire State Building in New York City every year during Valentine�fs Day. Those who have exchanged vows atop the building had observed that their lips crackled with electricity when they kissed! Experts link this to the huge static electricity build-up near the top of the building.
In Wales, wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on Feb 14. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favorite decorations on the spoons. The decorations meant �gYou unlock my heart!�h
During the Middle Ages, young men and women would draw names from a bowl to determine their Valentine�fs date. They would then wear the names on their sleeves for one week. This was how thee term �ewearing your heart on your sleeve�f came about.
The Chinese Valentine�fs Day is celebrated on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month in the Chinese calendar. It commemorates the love between the Emperor of Heaven�fs 7th daughter and an orphaned cowherd. The lovers were separated by the Emperor, and only allowed to meet on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month. Traditionally, people in love or those who are single will visit the temple on that day to pray for their love and marriage.
Wearing a ring on the left 4th finger dates back to ancient Egypt, where it was believed that the vein of love ran from this finger directly to the heart.
Emperor Claudius II, ruler of Rome in the 3rd century, outlawed marriage so young men would serve the army without distraction. A Roman priest named Valentine saw the injustice and performed marriages in secret. He was caught and sentenced to death. While in prison, he fell in love with the daughter of his prosecutor and wrote her a letter signing off: �gForm your Valentine.�h He was beheaded on Feb 14, 270 AD and St. Valentine�fs Day was declared in 498 AD in his memory.
