Just a poll, since so many people use different things to download their media files, mp3's, executable, games, etc. I'd like to know what most of you use to download stuff. You can also add why you like/dislike the d/l process. If you do chose "others", let us know what it is that you use, so we can compare that with the ones that are listed.

It really depends which type of files i'm getting at the moment

I use Bittorrent for new releases (movies, TV), anime etc.
Emule / Edonkey networks for rarer files and korean stuff
WinMx for Japanese PVs, CMs and some mp3s

Too stingy to pay for streamload and mirc connection sucks for me.

I like emule b/c of their comprehension library on so many files to so many servers. I'd prolly like BT too, for specifics, but since i'm d/l via dial up, if i'm d/l something and it's 99% done, if that person doesn't seed anymore, I just wasted a lot of time with that 1 file. In emule, however, i can do so many files at once.

As far as streamload goes, I used to do them, but they are expensive.

I chose the good old ftp Mr Green
Bittorrent is superb! but doesn't stand a chance against ftp, a private access to goods. I use BT mainly for jdramas. ftp for idol goods, trades etc. Must not forget irc either, hehe.

*Drools over the newsgroup access* Drooling

I use almost everything listed. Each different means of download has its benefits.

BitTorrent - all the new dramas, really fast
eMule - old rare dramas, can be really slow
WinMX - JPOP and Japanese Music, newsgroup stuff
IRC - for other rare jdramas and trading
Kazaa - JPop

I guess you could use another machine to circumvent the whole ip address thing, but this isn'nt a popularity contest, but a HIGHLY METHODICAL Data Gathering! Wink (JK. I'm just nosey.)

Since you have an ftp client, how about if I set up an ftp account for you? Smile You'll be able to leech the songs.

Lovelessmotion:

Check out this waay old tutorial: http://www.netknowledgebase.com/tutorials/g6server.html

It has pretty much all you need to know. g6 is now owned by bulletproof so it's called bulletproof ftp serve, so the setup should still pretty much be the same. I've run serv-u, g6, glftp and raidenftp servers. Just download the software, install, and follow the tutorial. If you're not behind a router there shouldn't be any problems, but if you are, you'll have to learn how to configure your router to forward your ports (my router doesn't let me do this so I have 2 connections to my modem, a direct and one through the router).

Good luck,
-Romance

p.s. ftp is the way to go if you get some good people to trade with, leech/ratio accounts, etc... having a few TBs of content available is always nice and will happen if you're an avid collector ^^

From the looks of it, it seems that a most of us here get their media fix via BT, and some of us uses the emule network. ANother question for y'all: Does anti-virues/home firewall/virus protections slow down the download much? And if it does, what kind of protection would slow me down the least? I used to use kerio firewall, but using that effectively stop ALL my downloads.
It seem to me that, altho risky, I've been d/l'ing my stuff without any protection to get max speed is worth it (I had dial up). Any thoughts? What do you use?

anti-virus/firewall should be negligible during downloads. It slows me down during email uploads though. The one that does slow things down is if you use a proxy server especially the anonymous variety.

There was a time when i use to get backdoor seven attacks like 8 times a day!!! Didnt found out about it until I installed a firewall. Google Most of the attacks seems to originate from brazil and europe!!! I'm using norton right now. but there's a good free firewall, forgot the name though.
