Her in that Santa suit was hilarious - especially when the small boy peered underneath her skirt!! Then there was Koyuki in the construction worker attire. She just blended into the scene & I was rolling away when her colleague asked her to put out her hands & gave her the candies. Her expression of amazement at the genoristy as well as her surprise at seeing the candies which were obviously partially eaten! Koyuki in Suekko was funny & adorable. I think without her, the drama would not have been so funny, eh? |
yup, she did great in suekko chonnin... _________________

I don't know how many times I've said this, but yes Koyuki's a pretty cool actress. She has the looks & style, but most important she has the talent to do a variety of roles - comedy (Suekko), serious (Laundry, Beautiful Life, Mukodono), romance (Kimi, Boku), geeky (Engine, Tentai). As you can see, she does not have many drama credits as compared to others but in that short span of time (1999-2005), her progress has been fantastic. What's more, she also acts in films at both local & international level. So the only thing that's dissapointing to her fans is the small number of acting roles that she's taken so far as compared to her CM work. We simply must see more of her acting eh?

She came into 2006 with a bang. First, she won an award at the Tokyo International jewelry, then got nominated for her role in Always at Japan Academy Awards. Then came all the bad news. She didn't win the Best Actress award, despite the film sweeping all the other nominated categories (13 out of 14 I think)! Talking about bad luck!!. Next I heard she had problems with her management agency, so she's now in cold storage, it seems. She doesn't seem to be doing anything - no new drama roles, no film offers and worse, her staple of commercials' spot has only been for Panasonic, Bausch & Lamb and SK II since January. On top of that, the media & tabloids have not much of good things to report about her. Like, she's been described as becoming big-headed & dressing in more sexier, daring outfits (something like being desperate for attention etc) which I think has been unfair & bringing undue pressure on her life. I think she needs to sign a new management team too coz they've not been paying her much attention. Go to her website at FlaMme, her pictures were still old ones back in 2004 & see what I mean. She needs to seriously consider going for Hollywood roles before she turns 35 or before they forgot about her altogether like Chiaki Kuroyama etc. if she's really serious about acting.
On her personal front, I don't think her new boyfriend will be someone inspirational for her. He's a good actor, no doubt but such a womaniser that I shudder to think how Koyuki will pick herself up if they ever broke up. Kenji on the other hand, has been a decent guy, so its such a pity they've gone separate ways.
So I think, it all points out to a lousy 2006 for Koyuki. Hope I'm wrong though coz she's the best actress Japan has after so long & I'm patiently waiting for her new films & dramas. Let's hope I'm really, really wrong.

wow, that was a bountiful amount of information. thx! it all makes sense because her media exposure does seem to have decreased as of late. again, great update albeit somewhat disturbing news.
i dunno about her being the "best" actress in japan, i personally think rie miyazawa owns that title but we all have different opinions.

Sorry if I sounded so obtruse by declaring Koyuki as the best. Guess it depends on one's own experience. Among those that I've seen (all the recent actresses)- Tokiwa Takako, Kou Shibasaki, Matsu Takako, Mitshushima Nanako, Ryo, Tomoko Yamaguchi, Wakui Emi, Yada Akiko, Tsurata Mayu, Kuroki Hitomi, Shinohara Ryoko, Itoh Misaki, Uchiyama Rina & Yoshino Kimura, I think I can safely conclude that the best actress ranking based on my personal preference is Koyuki, Wakui Emi, Shinohara Ryoko, Matsu Takako, Tsurata Mayu & Tomoko Yamaguchi.
The rest (which I've cannot recall here) has not moved me in their acting despite having the looks and boundless drama roles. EXCEPT for Rie Miyazawa whose work I've not seen yet, I've heard she's quite good so I think while I wait for Koyuki's new film/drama, I'll go find one of hers. She's not been into acting lately right? So what's her best dramas/films?

if you want to see some of rie miyazawa's best work i'd recommend the films tasogare seibei (the twilight samurai), the face of jizo and tony takatani. she's won multiple awards for those performances.
don't get me wrong...i think koyuki is a capable actress.
