Me too!
I've been pretty good with my To-Do list! I'm only one day behind on it. _________________

Don't feel too bad. If you're not in Japan seeing a Hello! Project or AKB48 concert, or... at least shopping for Idol Merchandise, you might as well be at work.

I'd rather be in Japan than just about anywhere

I usually do Creature Containers in Grade 9, where the students create creatures that are also functional (i.e. a serpent that is an ashtray). In Grade 10 I have the students research a Myth from any culture of their choice, and they are to recreate their interpretation of the creature in the myth.
But for Grade 11... I have no idea. Any suggestions? |
Japanese-style pottery?

Yea, I was thinking about it. I've been looking at some of Koie Ryoji's work. But I don't know what the basis would be. Like the theme. It's easy to show them technique, and present for them various Japanese ceramic artists... but then what's the end product?
Should I make them portray an emotion? A social issue? A story? _________________

That's pretty deep for a hs pottery class. The Japanese pottery idea should be cool and have a high likelihood of success.

That's the way it is. We don't just teach students technique. We show them how to portray a message through their work of art. If you're not communicating something to the viewer, it's not a work of art. It's just craft. _________________

All of the above... Something that each student feels strongly about.

Mebbe I will. There's enough creative freedom there. Thanks! _________________

Yes! And this will all depend on the info I give them. Time to research! _________________

You know what might be cool ...? Show the class the Azumi movies.
Granted, it may not be as good as going to Japan and visiting places and seeing things. But, it sure is a motivating movie that encourages more independent research on elements of Japan.
