I like listening to some Canto-pop every so often. I like Twins, Leon Lai (he's getting old however), Kelly Chen, Sammi Cheung, and LMF. For Taiwanese singers I like Elva Siu, Lee Hom Wang, and Richie Ren. :]

You should hear my Sakai Noriko sing in Mandarin. She dedicated an entire CD, You Yuan Qian Li, to this type of music when she visited Taiwan in the early 1990's. On the CD, she even sings a duet with Eric Suan. The song's the only Mandarin song I can sing karaoke to.

WOW! Google That's old-school noriko! do you understand the song, or do you karaoke-it (the song) phonetically, a-la romanji?

Well HK do tend to copy other things alot, and those definitly have some truth in it, but some chinese songs are pretty good as well.

As to LMF, I personally don't like them too much, but if you like them you should read some of their lyrics, funny stuff.

I do the romaji thing! However, one night I was complimented by a couple of guys from Micronesia, saying that they understood what I was saying.

Yeah, that's old-school alright... I think that was 1992. I'll try to MP3 my original CD later tonight.

Hmmm, Japan does that a lot, too. Don't know about Korea, but I think it might be an asian thing.

As for people who write their own songs, that happens in every country. Pretty much no pop star in America, China, or Japan write their own songs. Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Hello Project, Sammi Cheng, Jacky Cheung, Johnny's Jimusho folks, SMAP, Kinki Kids, et al. The pop stars that compose their own songs (not just write their lyrics to a song they're fed) are the exception rather than the rule.

Disclaimer: I am referring to pop stars, not rock stars. Please don't kill me...
