First, figure out if DSL is offered in your area. Some older residential areas have phone lines incapabable of handling a DSL connection. You should check with your local DSL providers.
Then it's a comparison of the prices and performance. Cable and DSL work on completely different technologies. For cable, a neighbourhood shares a single large bandwidth connection, so if there are lots of people in your area with cable internet, expect your downloads to be a lot less than advertised. (Sometimes, even worse than dialup) DSL has a dedicated bandwidth for each modem, so you are guaranteed a certain bandwidth.
Finally, you should check whether the ISP has any download limits. For DSL, I believe some ISPs limit the amount you can transfer to a few GB a month. Cable is around a dozen GB. This really sucks, especially if you rely on your internet for your entertainment needs. (BT comes to mind) Remember to read the fine print very carefully, cuz ISPs can and DO cut people off if they are 'excessive' users. (Meaning they can't rip you off like the saps that pay 40 bucks to surf web and read email)
my 2 cents
