They used to have RR ads all the ttime about 3 yrs ago here, but i think here in DC, RR was bought out by Cox Communication, which i think in turn was bought out by Comcast. I used to have Cox cable tv, but since about a yr ago, i started getting billed by comcast.

Oh.. no need to envy those with T1. Cos most of the time the Universities limit their total ul/dl usage to about 500MB per week. Meaning the most u can dl in a week is about 1 ep of drama. Which is sad....

That's like 3250kB/s ?? DSL can support that?
I use 3000/640 kbps DSL, around 350/80 kB/s real world speed.

Simply put, it's a REALLY fast connection that (big) businesses, universities, etc. use... It makes DSL, cable modem, et al, look like dialup....

The only REALLY HUGE difference between frame-relay circuits (ex: T1, T3, etc.) and cable/DSL is one thing that residental customers never hear of: CIR
CIR is "carrier information rate". In Laymen's terms, it basically means if I sign onto a contract with the telco for a certain data rate, I'm guaranteed that data rate for the duration of the contract. If at ANY time during the contract period I do not receive that data rate, the telco is penalized in accordance with the contract (usually via either subtracting the billable hours that the data rate wasn't met, or a penalty fee).
Did anyone ever sign a CIR contract for DSL or cable modem? Naaaaaaaaaaah! I didn't think so! You only see CIR contracts on T-1, T-3, OC-x, and other frame-relay circuits.
As for DSL or cable modem... It probably is faster than most frame-relay circuits. But the telco or cable company has absolutely no obligation to meet any pre-determined data rate, ala Comcast and other forms of trottling (limiting bandwidth to substantially less than the size of the pipe itself).
As a result, there aren't any serious companies/corporations using cable modem or DSL as their major pipe to the public Internet. They can't afford to be pushed around or screwed by the vendors.
Here's a link to a thoroughly written (and very techy) white paper on T-1 circuits: http://www.dcbnet.com/notes/9611t1.html
