I'd like to make a suggestion regarding the newbies in the forum who go post crazy without even bothering to read the rules first. Would it be possible for example, that after the registration of a new member, he/she would immediately be shown a pop-up or splash screen of some sort, indicating the guidelines to be followed when posting? So that he/she would be initiated properly into the forum. I dunno if it's just me, but I'v seen an increase in the number of noobs needlessly creating new threads. Having this welcome screen for new members might help decrease the occurrence of the creation of new threads by newbies.

There are numerous ways to combat this... such as not being able to create new topics until you have X number of posts.
-time, waiting a week before you can post
-posting in specific threads first (ones w/ FAQ's)
-immediate 1 week ban on users who create multiple threads on the same topic.
etc.. etc..
problem is implemenation, and trying not to exclude/alienate new users. I feel that Genma wants this forum to be as open as possible, so this is what we'll have to live with.

well I really don't think there's a way to stop this, but the splash thing might help.
OR/AND send an automatic PM pnce they register stating to read the FAQs first before they post.. and all those good stuff.

as of now, yes, no way to stop it besides the mods.
General, Learn Japanese and J-Ent hasn't been as bad as of late (which is why I haven't logged in to zap 'kudaran' posts)
I think most of the trouble is in 'DOD' and 'DOA'. (I've no mod power in those forums)
Genma, can we do something about this? (new mods to help out?)
Current we only have the list of gulde lines sent to the users when they first register. Unfortunately, I think majority would ignore them.
We could mandate a minimum requirement before creating new topics, but for example, having 10 posts in your pocket doesn't mean you'd create a sensible topic. We might even have newbies posting junk to rack up their post count just so that they can start a new topic.
At the moment we're still relying on our mods until we have a clean solution to it. I'm thinking of letting mods cross-moderate all forums, but still concentrate on their own forts. _________________

good idea. my vote would be a minimum of 15 posts b4 they can post new topics. as far as posting spams to get to a minimum, i can delete them as soon as they can post'em (or at least my section anyways... )

I think the cross moderation is a good idea. --Just as long as everyone is aware that the cross moderating ability does not warrant that they have 'control' over all forums. Rather, to use the ability as a last resort, or merely help out other mods (in times of absence) on keeping the forums in order in the interim.

Oh yes, I've always wondered about this too.
Giving out warnings and deleting and moving posts only does so much. Upon figuring out that's all the moderators abilities lead to (in most cases), will not diminsh a troll/spammer's resolve in the least. IMO: They'll keep on going because they will then be aware that no 'real' consequence will result. Rather, it becomes an endurance game between the mod and the troll/spammer. -Who will quit first? _________________
heh, the minimum posts thingy won't be too straightforward. I think for alot people, reason for signing up would be to start a new thread. We have many guests in the forum who just read and not reply nor start discussions.
When would temporary bans ideally be used and prove useful? A persistent troll can just re-create new accounts to spam. Temp-banning by IP can't be met out coz IPs are not reliable.
Cross-modding should be good especially for general discussions and maybe artiste discussions. I'll implement it soon for the high-traffic forums, and we'll see how things goes. _________________

I thought that DHCP tries to give the same IP address to each MAC hardware. At least that is what I have observed with my cable internet. I would hope this applies to dial-up and DSL folks.

I think the creation of any new threads (aside from maybe the Buy, Sell, Trade forum) should require permission from one of the mods or possibly allow ONLY the mods to be able to create new threads.
That would also stop spam threads from being created...
Does this phpBB software allow thread creation control??
