I really like this Taiga drama! I usually don't really watch these (Toshiie and Matsu being an exception), but this one's got me hooked. It's really interesting (not to mention all the good looking men for me to look at!). Sorry bmwracer, I know you prefer Musashi with lovely Ryoko in it, but... Bleah

That's one BIG reason, to see "GOOD LOOKING MEN", especially Kouji Yamamoto, he's one hot looking *cough* sexy male in ancient custome.

That's why I think the ratings are so high. I think Musashi's story is much much better, but this show is about boy-power... hehe

Yep. There isn't any gal in Shinsengumi that is remotely worth looking at, so there you have it.

Heck, I just think it's a great show (but the fine females make it that much better Bleah )

I think that last night's episode (in Hawaii, via KIKU-TV), Episode 5: "Wedding Day," or something 'long the lines of that, to The Man, was THE single best Taiga episode ever for any series.

You're really beginning to see the Kondo's mindset that marks him as "the one" to create a band like the Shinsengumi; I mean, how else can you characterize a brotha' -- on his wedding day, no less -- willing to help his friend out of trouble. The fact that his new bride, Tsune, supports him more than she's expected to, let's admit, compliments Kondo's actions, breaks the impression of how we're supposed to think of such Tokugawa-era marriages (and this is not to say that Kondo better be a damn good husband to her, which, we know he will if that last scene means to say anything). You can see a grand love story forming into this already great tale . . . and at the same time, you're fearful because you know how it all ends for Kondo.

And all of that, for one show, would've been enough for The Man. Did it stop there, though? No. You're seeing all the future members of the Shinsengumi in this transition period: in addition to what's mentioned above for Kondo, Toshizo's getting more serious 'bout his lot in life; Souji Okita keeps honing his skills; Sutesuke Takimoto, even, is a loyal friend (enough to crash his childhood pal's wedding Smile ) to the end, you can see; Kogoro Katsuura's steadfast demeanor finds a niche in the group; even a Nishigi Niimi is shown introduced (sorta') to Kondo and his nucleic crew. Once they all hone their skills further, guys like Tomomitsu Yamaguchi and Sanosuke Harada can fall in nicely. I think that, real or imagined, all this myriad of personalities are valued in a group like Shinsengumi.

Not even Yuka? (I know she's supposed to appear in this drama.) Mr Green

BTW I'm not much into history so this might be a really stupid question, but how close are Taiga dramas to the actual historical events? (Not just Shinsengumi, but all Taiga dramas.)

Hey Akakage you're right about Yamamoto. He really looks good in this drama! But then so does Odagiri Joe & Fujiwara Tatsuya! hehe

I'm watchin' "Shinsengumi" in NHK International (or World Premiun, as they call). The last episode I've watched was the 14th. I agree with Akakage, I think the plot is gettin' better and better, really interesting. Saturday I'll watch the 15th.
But I'm still thinkin' Shingo Katori doesn't fit in the main role (Sorry, guys !!!).

Like I said before not each episodes are good but I think after episodes 15 it's getting better.
Yeah, got to admit, sometimes I sort of see Shingo struggling so hard to have this pose as a great leader, Kondo Isami. But I just have to admire his effort even he's not too fitted with that role Smile

Haven't seen that many Taiga dramas, but they only used Yoshikawa Eiji's book as a baseline for Musashi... Lotsa stuff in Musashi wasn't in the book...

i just saw the 1st ep yester day and i thought that it's more comedic in entertainment then historical edu-tainment, which is fine by me. If they REALLY wanted to make it a yuk-fest, the name shoulda been 'shinsengumi-bears', LOL!
