From a security standpoint, instant messenger programs have become one of the new targets of hackers during the last few years.

In particular, as IM programs have added more and more features, they present more and more security holes.

Try to remember to keep your operating systems patched up, your anti-virus programs up to date, and run a spy-ware/adware checker as well. If you can afford one, set up a simple firewall (eg, Linksys) in front of your PC. It's much better to have a firewall in front of your PC than to run a software-based firewall on your PC.

And of course, try to use administrative sense, such as rolling your passwords periodically and using a password that isn't easily guessed.

On a random note, Aka-chan, your avatar photos always crack me up! Hee hee. hehe Applaud

Luku, thanks for helping me post this here. Big Grin

Thanks Rinrin! I got back my MSN account. Dancing

pcmodem is right. It's important to keep our computers safe from viruses, trojans and what nots. But the problem this time is that i clicked on a link my 'friend' sent me. Entered my email address and password to get to a site i thought she was showing me. Problem is, my friend's account was hacked already!

Word of caution to everyone, as long as it's something that requires your password, make sure you know who sends it to you...even if it's a friend you trust a lot. Coz what with important mails and things like internet banking, once a password is gone, it may take days to get it back. By then, it may be too late.

And dun use the same password for all your accounts...coz i believe my friend did that and both her Hotmail and Yahoo accounts were taken over.

Sorry for a non-Joe post here. Smile

Glad to hear you got your account back in order again Wai!

I don't blame you for the off-topic. It's really scary now, especially with the advances in technology! From what I've been hearing, they can record your keystrokes using a program which kinda makes me feel really paranoid! It's good to warn people that this kinda thing is going on to keep them aware that it can happen.

On internet security...is internet banking safe? What about leaving information about ourselves when we make purchases online?

i suggest to have ad-aware on your systems, maybe you can try clearing your cache and cookies after you go online shopping, but then again, im not a hardware comp wiz.. i recently discovered that even if you deleted everything on your comp and decided to sell it, please do be careful.. theres always something hidden in there.. i read reading the coolest electronic magazine in the world SYNC, someone sold or gave their comp away to the company and they found like naked and mostly porn pictures of them lol and some CC infos stored in there too, and when they called the owner they thought it was a prank call and denied it all, and also thought they deleted everything, but guess not... anyhoo..

thank goodness my router's linksys and they pretty much come in handy.. glad your account's back wai.. hearing from someone i know getting hack is creepy..

anyway, i got this off from the shinobi flash site

this would be a nice wallpaper.. hehe im pretty sure someone wants it., i know i did. Mr Green

Yes, it's safe, as long as the business you are working with have good security.

I'd not purchase things online from a small "mom and pop" size online store, as their security is likely to be lax and easily overcome by a professional.

AdAware, as MD mentioned, is an excellent free program. Spybot is also recommended.

NEVER DO ONLINE PURCHASES OR BANKING OVER A WIRELESS CONNECTION. Wireless protocol is EASILY cracked by a professional.

With regard to data, all data is still on your HDD even after you empty it from the Recycle Bin. As long as there's sufficient free space on your HDD, erased data is recoverable, for better or worse. Even if your format the HDD, the data is still there, though only a professional data recovery engineer with the proper tools can recover the data after that point.

Best thing you can do to protect yourself, when you want to throw away a HDD, is to open it up with a screwdriver and pour water on it. It's useless afterwards.

On a thread specific note, anyone know what Joe's projects are for 2006?

Yup...learnt my lesson. Downloaded BOTH spybot and adaware after the incident, but still am quite paranoid when i receive any links or files. Shameful Cry

Went to Shinobi's site last night after i saw on cable that it's shown on the 30th...wonder if that's for Singapore! Can't wait for it...will be watching even though it's the exam period and there'll tons of papers to be marked!! Beaten

Please...can anyone update me on Joe's latest happenings? Kinda miss watching his shows! All my J-dramas are sitting in the cupboard, collecting dust. Puppy Dog Eyes

You did? Awwww, I wish I could see it! hehe

Just found out Joe will be appearing in a movie called "The Uchoten Hotel" which will be coming out next year. The movie is directed by Mitani Koki ("Shinsengumi!") and also stars Katori Shingo, Matsu Takako, Namase Katsuhisa, as well as a lot of other stars.
