However, I think Ichikawa Shinnosuke was the best actor for Musashi I've seen, even better than Toshiro Mifune, in the sense of portraying someone who had violence in him and yet a seed of humanity that grew, because of his experiences, into something greater than simply a swordfighter.

My thoughts exactly about Ichikawa Shinnosuke. The NHK drama intended to show a Musashi different from that tough and invincible man we used to see in others movies/dramas about his life. And Shinnosuke played this role with passion and dignity. I think he was great. Applaud
Obviously, I don't have anything against Toshiro Mifine. I love him too.

I haven't watched the beginning of Musashi, or even the middle part. I tuned in kind of late, but I was wondering what Okoh's relationship to Toji was.

Oko was basically a golddigger: She dumped Matahachi for Toji, because he was in line to take over the Yoshioka school, if Seijuro lost to Musashi. But the school had financial problems from Seijuro's excessive partying, and it's dyeing business collapsed after Densichiro's defeat at the hands of Musashi. After the stunning defeat at Ichijoji, Toji and Oko ran off and became the leaders of a pack of thieves...
