Audi Wins Classic 60th Anniversary Race at Sebring
BMW Team RLL wins dramatic GT battle
Audi returned to victory at Sebring International Raceway for the first time since 2009 on Saturday with a convincing victory in the 60th Anniversary Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida. Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish completed 301 laps in their Audi R18 to win by four laps in the opening round of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón and the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Audi finished 1-2 at Sebring for the first time since 2005. Kristensen extended his Sebring record with his sixth overall victory. Capello now has won five times and McNish four. The winning trio gained control in the second half of the race as gearbox problems beset the pole-winning No. 1 Audi and the second-place R18 suffered contact with a slower car in the last hour.
Dyson Racing took advantage of fueling issues from Muscle Milk Pickett Racing and won the ALMSf P1 class. The trio of Chris Dyson, Guy Smith and Steven Kane moved into the class lead near the 30-minute mark. Dyson Racing won last yearfs P1 team championship, and Dyson and Smith claimed the drivers championship.
Their victory Saturday came within a week of testing the new Lola-Mazda for the first time. On the other end of the spectrum, the Muscle Milk crew was devastated by their final-hour fueling problems. Klaus Graf, Lucas Luhr and Simon Pagenaud ran in overall podium position for much of the racefs second half in their HPD ARX-03a prototype.
Joey Hand won GT for BMW Team RLL on the last turn of the last lap with a daring pass for the teamfs second straight Sebring victory with the BMW M3 GT. It was a frantic race for much of the second half with six cars in position for the lead. Hand appeared to lose the lead on the final lap when he was forced off on the first third of the lap by an AF Corse Ferrari.
Hand went off track but never lost the lead thanks to a remarkable recovery.
Corvette Racingfs trio of Jan Magnussen, Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor also got around Beretta at the finish and ended 6.3 seconds behind the BMW. Beretta, Andrea Bertolini and Marco Cioci placed third in their Ferrari F458 Italia

Wow, haven't seen a black license plate since my dad had one on his 1963 Ford Country Squire station wagon... We used to always play with the motorized rear tailgate window.
BMW adds extra sportiness to its i-series lineup, unveils i8 Concept Spyder
We've swooned over BMW's i3 and i8 plug-in gasoline electric hybrids for some time now, so naturally our hearts raced today when the company announced its latest addition to the series, the i8 Concept Spyder. What you're looking at is essentially a sportier version of the i8 Coupe, with the appropriate accents and design tweaks to match. So, what's different in this variant of the nearly gull-winged wonder with a 96 kW / 131hp electric motor up front and 164 kW / 223hp gasoline engine on back? BMW notes that the vehicle features a shorter wheelbase and overall length (all while maintaining its 50-50 weight distribution), a slighter darker interior and refreshed paint job on its exterior, topless roof and even a pair of matching folded kickboards(!) that stow in the back. BMW hasn't mentioned when they'll be showing this Spyder in flesh, but as Autoblog notes, the New York Auto show is only a week way -- and we'll be sure to let you know if we spot it ourselves.
Ferdinand Porsche, legendary 911 sports car creator, dies at 76
5 April, 2012, 20:15
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the man responsible for creating one of the world's most iconic cars, has died in Germany.
A statement from the German company confirmed Professor Porsche, grandson of company founder Ferdinand Porsche, had passed away in Salzburg.
The designer, nicknamed Butzi, joined the family company in 1956 where he worked in the technical design department.
In 1962 he was made the manager of the Porsche design studios and the following year he showed off the Porsche 901, which later became the world-famous 911. The sportscar, which had a rear-mounted engine, could accelerate from 0-100kmh in 9.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 210kmh.
Professor Porsche worked at the company until 1972, when it went public, and started the Porsche Design Group, which created a variety of high quality products from kitchens to mobile phones.
Despite being nearly 50 years old, the 911's design is still unmistakable from the original model. Porsche unveiled the seventh generation 911 last year.
