I'm sure it is.

But since you're only comparing it to the "junk"... how hard is it to seem good?

That's like saying Gokusan is great TV when compared to all the other Gokusans.

Poor choice of words on my part: It's better than 99% of the shows on TV.... Which happen to be junk. Mr Green

I haven't watched any network TV since Seinfeld ended. Which is why I have all 9 seasons on DVD. That has its problems though. The other day I popped one in and watched an episode. For the rest of the day I couldn't get the phrase "He took it out" out of my head. Nut

just saw the first episode of the Apprentice UK

i like it. and i actually could understand what they were saying. lol. There's something about sir Allan that makes him look really rough, you know it's like he really worked his ass off and started from a scratch to get to his position right now.
plus IMO british accent is so sexy. especially for guys. and spanish is hot for women. Beaten

tried the first episode of The United States of Tara

the idea is there, the acting is there, don't like the execution. just like Californication. sex is good. vulgar. so is the languange. are all Showtime shows like this?

Pretty much.

Showtime, like HBO and Cinemax and Starz are pay cable stations. And as such they don't fall under the control of the FCC (Federal Communications Commission).

The FCC are the government guys who set the "standards and practices", tell TV producers how much violence they can show, how much sex they can show, and what evil, dirty, vulgar words they dare not use on the public airwaves.

Free from the FCC, the writers and producers who get shows on the pay stations tend to go overboard.

Since Showtime is small-time compared to HBO (the quality of HBO shows is a lot higher) it seems like they try harder to push the limits.

i must say.

just saw HBO's True Blood. sexy. thrilling. love it. the characters aren't the usual eyecandy though. and i don't know how a real southern accent sounds like so i didn't care. and no oozing teeny romance too

The last two HBO shows I got caught up in were "Rome" and "Generation Kill"

The first season of "Rome" was absolutely brilliant. The second... just very good.

"Generation Kill" really surprised me. I didn't expect to like it at all. I had little or no interest in a fictionalized account of the first days of the War in Iraq. I was, and am, a bit too angry about it to watch it as a piece of entertainment.

But the cast and the stories hooked me almost immediately. Not as good as HBO's "Band of Brothers" but quite a good series.

Hmm. It sounds like I'm touting the Military Channel.

i've been dying to watch Rome. can't find decent seed rate for the first season. always loved ancient-time themes -not the comedy ones though. plus it's one of the themes where a lot of sex is actually not disturbing.

Generation Kill is only 7 episodes. maybe i'll try it. eventhough i'm never lucky with war themes. Saving Private Ryan, or anyother good war movies you name it, didn't like any of them.

Monta

It's a good thing that a lot of sex in shows about acnient times doesn't bother you... because there's a lot of sex in HBO's "Rome". Some of it even I found disturbing... and I have no real standards at all.

I stumbled over another terrific little show from England.

The IT Crowd

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0487831/

I got the first season from Netflix.

It's a silly little sit com about the nerds in the IT department, living like moles in the sub basement of a huge multi-national corporation.

It's just a bit of comic silliness. Not tech oriented at all. But the cast members are great, and the jokes work.

A.D.

I've since downloaded all three seasons of "The IT Crowd", and amazingly enough... all three seasons were terrific.

I expected a drop off, but they just kept it going.

But dang it! Only 6 episodes per season. Very frustrating.

Now I'm back to randomly ordering shows that I've never heard of, in hopes of hitting on something good.

Geez, why go with new stuff? The first season of Burke's Law (boy am I dating myself now Mr Green ) is out on DVD. I've managed to limit myself to one episode every other day.
The mysteries aren't really that great, but boy, the guest stars: Wiliam Bendix, Zasu Pitts, Charlie Ruggles, Mary Astor, Rita Moreno, Sammy Davis, Jr. the list goes on and on. Applaud

Yeah, 6 eps per season. But if it stops the series from deteriorating, it's OK. I'd rather have 6 eps of gold than 13 eps of crap Smile

If you like bizarre British comedy, it doesn't get any better than this:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083505/

and it's available through Netflix....

That's pretty much my weekly line-up. (Not counting News and Politics)

@Geezer: I really enjoy Life and The Big Bang Theory too! w00t! Both well written!

Other shows that I like are:

Ugly Betty ABC- Gotta love that kooky fashion world.

Rosemary and Thyme PBS - British detective show with cases solved by two gardeners. Murders and beautiful flowers in one TV show!

New Tricks (Not about hookers hehe ) PBS - Cold cases that are twenty years old solved by retired British detectives

The Mentalist CBS - A psychic who works with detectives. Funny and what is not to like about Simon Burke?

The Unusuals ABC- New homicide detective show with off beat humor and a nice cast of zany characters.

Last not not least - No #1 Ladies' Detective Agency HBO - Filmed in Botswana. Love it!!!! It has humor, culture, good music, lovely set and costume colors and beautiful African scenery. Plus fine acting from Jill Scott and Anika Noni Rose.

There seems to be a strong theme in my choices - Detective shows! Who knew!

I don't know if I could handle seeing "The Young Ones" again. PBS up here in Northern California ran that series to death all through the mid and late '80s. The same few episodes over and over and over again.

The amusing (or should I say depressing) thing now is seeing those actors, still working. Only now they're the old fat guys guest staring in detective shows.

Mark

Man, I loved Burke's Law. That is, until what... the 3rd season?... when they decided to make him a spy. I still prefer him as Bat Masterson. (Now who's dating himself?)

Enna!!!

New Tricks is great! They just finished showing season 3 here on PBS.

Rosemary and Thyme. Well. That's Felicity Kendal. 30 years old... 60 years old. I don't care. I'm still in love with her. I just bought the boxed set of "Good Neighbors".

The Mentalist is pretty good. A case of the lead carrying the show on charm alone. I wonder how long he can keep it up.

I keep meaning to watch No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency ... but I just haven't gotten around to them yet. On Demand makes you lazy.

A.D.

If we're talking rathers... I'd rather have 36 episodes of gold.

I'm just annoyed with myself for going through them too quickly. I watched 3 episodes a day. And it took an effort to stop at 3.
