Masaaki Uchino stars in "Rinjo"
Wed, February 18, 2009 (12:08am EST)
"Rinjo," a novel by "Climber's High" author Hideo Yokoyama, is being adapted into a live-action series on TV Asahi. Masaaki Uchino has been cast in the lead role.

First published in 2004, "Rinjo" revolves around Yoshio Kuraishi, a legendary coroner with a keen eye for evidence, played by Uchino. The term "rinjo" is said to be police slang for the initial investigation carried out at the scene of the crime.

Uchino's supporting cast includes Yuki Matsushita, Masanobu Takashima, and Dai Watanabe.

"Rinjo" starts in April and will run in TV Asahi's Wednesday 9:00pm time slot, known for long-running mystery series such as "Aibou" and "Hagure Keiji Junjoha." Last summer, Uchino starred in "Gonzo: Densetsu no Keiji" in the same time slot.

This sounds very interesting to me. Hope it's good.

This is our next planned project. We will sub in English, of course. For those interested, you can check our progress on our wiki page.

Shota Matsuda stars in "parody mystery" series
Wed, March 4, 2009 (1:36am EST)

Actor Shota Matsuda has just picked up his first true lead role in a television drama. Titled "Meitantei no Okite," the show is based on a "parody mystery" work by award-winning author Keigo Higashino.

The original "Meitantei no Okite" is a short mystery collection that takes a humorous approach to many of the genre's cliches. Matsuda stars as the "famous detective" Daigoro Tenkaichi, while Yu Kashii plays the female lead as a rookie cop. Yuichi Kimura has also been cast.

"Meitantei no Okite" will air on TV Asahi on Friday nights at 11:15pm, starting in April.

What a coincidence! I just borrowed this book from the library and am currently half-way through it.I was thinking how it would be like if this book is being made into a drama.I don't remember there being a female rookie cop in the book up till the point I am reading and Tenkaichi isn't the lead of the novel either.

"Drifting Net Cafe" becomes drama
Thu, March 5, 2009 (2:50am EST)

Shuzo Oshimi's sci-fi manga series "Hyoryu Net Cafe" is being adapted into a television drama this spring. The show will star actor Atsushi Ito, who is well known for his starring role in "Densha Otoko."

Also known as "Drifting Net Cafe," the original manga revolves around salaryman Koichi Toki (Ito), who leads a trouble-free but unexciting life. One day he stops by an internet cafe, where he runs into his first love whom he never forgot (played by model KIKI). A sudden electrical failure traps him and the other customers in the cafe, which has become a strange universe of its own.

As the manga is still fairly new, the original story's ending has not yet been decided, so the drama will possibly depart from the comic's storyline.

The supporting cast also includes Reina Asami. TBS will air the drama on Wednesday nights at 12:29am (12:44am for the first episode). It premieres on April 15.

KimuTaku, This Time as a Weirdo... A Brain Scientist with a Bizarre Common Sense
Sports Hochi, April 1st, 8 AM

translated by yanie

Kimura Takuya of SMAP (36) will be the leading role of TBS new drama, "MR. BRAIN" (Saturdays, 7.56 PM, starting May 23rd). He will play the role of a brain scientist who works in the crime laboratory and solves difficult cases. But it will be an unusual character and with a quite high level of weirdness. It will be his first challenge in a Saturdays 8 PM drama, "It's not about Ichiro-san of WBC, but it might be quite a center of attention,".

Kimura had play roles with various professions, and in his latest drama, he chose the role of a genius brain scientist with a bizarre common sense, Tsukumo Ryusuke.

As a researcher in the crime laboratory of national police agency, he solves various cases from a superhuman concept to difficult cases, but he totally cannot interact with people around him. "Weirdness level? It's high compared to what I have played before. Maybe people can only be with him once a month," Kimura said he wasn't able to grasp the character totally either, but after a long discussion with the staff, he started able to build up Tsukumo, the unique character.

For example, one of his habit is, when he talk to people around him, he'll get close to them in a bizarre way. "He want people's distance to be as close as possible. But it's always too close, when I realized it, I don't know where should I gaze at,"

It's a case-by-case(case/story solved in 1 episode) original story that has indiscriminate terrorism, assasination, abduction, and other serious cases. Beside the interesting part of how he solve each case, his comical interactions with his assistant (Ayase Haruka) and a police officer (Mizushima Hiro) is also one of the highlight. And since this drama was written with references / guide from a real brain scientist, the audience can also learn about the brain science knowledge. "Apparently human only use 5% of their brain capacity. This is a world where many things can be realized, but this character tries to prove that there's a possibility that even alot more things can be done,"

Regarding the fact that it will soon be the 1st anniversary for TBS Saturdays 8 PM slot. "It is 1 hour earlier than what we usually had. Since it might be a time before parents tell their kids to go to sleep, it may become a center of attention. It's not about Ichiro-san of WBC, but I hope it will attract many ages and meet people's expectation,".

More info from other articles:

-Tsukumo Ryusuke was a hostman, but due to an accident only one part of his brain developed. Ever since he has an extraordinary idea, concept and thinking, he started a brain science research.

-Tsukumo's weird fashion should be a highlight. Kimura commented, "It's an intriguing fashion in a bad meaning,"

-Since Kimura has difficulties in grasping his own character this time, he said he felt quite a pressure. He met a real brain scientist for references and idea in creating the character.

-Director is Fukuzawa Katsuo, who has directed Karei-naru Ichizoku.

-Other casts: Daichi Mao as the crime laboratory chief (53). Kagawa Teruyuki as police detective (43). Researchers in the laboratory are Tanaka Yuji of Bakusho Mondai (44), Tortoise Matsumoto (42) and others who appears in variety shows often.

-The first day of filming was on the 27th last month, when Kimura was interviewed by the sport papers, he suddenly said, "I would like to recommend to you, that when you are talking to someone who you want to be liked with, it's better if you stand at his/her left side,". He explained that people's left side view is being processed in the right side of the brain that administers sensitivity.

=END=

Galileo and Kiina... same pattern. But I'm interested on how weird can Kimura get^^

I think it's because it will only run for 6 episodes just like God Hand Teru.

I saw the clip from Asazuba, seem like Kimura's usual performance in SxS skits might be shown in this drama indeed^^ "Mr. Brain" seem to be very hyperactive.

His characters in SxS are awesome. I hope it will be so for this drama too...Smile

...

ZZZZZZZZ....

I'm not very optimistic about the mystery part of the script. As Kiina has shown, it's very hard to write science related mysteries w/o the necessary domain knowledge. Galileo is successful because the author of the books on which the drama is based has a physics background, and we all saw how the last episode fell apart when the script writer was forced to come up with his own story (he's not a very good writer anyway; he really screwed up Liar Game). Some of the Kiina mysteries were almost carbon copies of those in Galileo (and the others were pretty lame), so the only entertainment factor was to watch Kano Miho's performance and the chemistry among the supporting cast.

I'm not sure what Brain Science is (cognitive/behavioral/psychological science ala The Mentalist?), but the script is mainly handled by the same person who wrote Trick; and based on Puzzle, has long since ran of of "tricks". Bonk Perhaps they'll prove me wrong...

Ah, hontou da!! Mr. Brain is written by Makita Mitsuharu, who wrote TRICK series! If only the directing is handled by TRICK's director(Tsutsumi Yukihiko) too. His directing really suits the flow of the dialogues written by Makita. I miss that series(still wishing for a 4th season)!

Since it says there will be comical interactions between Kimura-Ayase-Hiro, I think it's possible that it's going to be the similar funny dialogues like the trio Yamada-Ueda-Yabe in TRICK has.

I hope you're right, but I'm not as enthusiastic.

If you compare Trick to Sushi Oji (same director, different writer), the humor is very similar (puns, double entendre's, inuendos, etc.); whereas if you compare Mop Girl to Puzzle (again same group of directors but different writers), the comedy is also very similar but more physical.

Therefore, the style of humor/comedy in a drama depends a lot on the director and not so much on the writer. Q.E.D. Beaten

Kiina's criminal cases were real case files. I find some of the cases familiar because they were reported in the newspapers.

The drama failed because it mixes bimbo-ism and mystery into a compound. Don't expect a combustion. It becomes like a vitamin C efferversence tablet fizzing out after a while.

Kimura is good at acting weird or eccentric. Remember Beautiful Life, Sleeping Forest etc. ?
