Namase takes spotlight in "Trick" spinoff drama

A few months ago, it was announced that the television drama franchise "Trick" is getting its third theatrical film this spring. Now, it has been revealed that it will also get its first spinoff drama series, focusing on the character played by Katsuhisa Namase (49).

"Keibuho Yabe Kenzo" will be the first starring role for Namase in a television series. In the "Trick" dramas and movies, which revolved around the mystery-solving duo of amateur magician Naoko Yamada (Yukie Nakama) and university professor Jiro Ueda (Hiroshi Abe), Namase played the odd wig-wearing detective Kenzo Yabe. His character attracted many fans, who have voiced plenty of requests for a spinoff.

In "Keibuho Yabe Kenzo," the detective will have to tackle difficult cases on his own, without the help of Yamada and Ueda. His supporting cast includes Tetsuhiro Ikeda (39) and Shihori Kanjiya (24).

TV Asahi has scheduled the series for its Friday 11:15pm time slot, with the first episode airing in April. The "Trick" movie opens in theaters on May 8.

This has possiblities!! Applaud

Given her track record (Orange Days, Sora Kara Furu, Beautiful Life, Overtime, Long Vacation) I don't think she has to worry about ratings.

"Team Batista" drama series also gets sequel

The "Team Batista no Eikou" drama series is back for a second round. Atsushi Ito (26) and Toru Nakamura (44) will reprise their lead roles.

The initial season of "Team Batista" aired on Fuji TV in late 2008 and pulled in strong ratings, leading to a follow-up last October in the special episode "Nightingale no Chinmoku." The dramas were based on the first two novels in a best-selling medical mystery series by writer Takeru Kaido. The new season is based on the third novel, "General Rouge no Gaisen."

Both "Team Batista no Eikou" and "General Rouge no Gaisen" have also been adapted as a feature films, starring Yuko Takeuchi (29) and Hiroshi Abe (45).

Fuji TV will broadcast "Team Batista 2: General Rouge no Gaisen" on Tuesdays at 10:00pm, beginning on April 6. New cast members this time include Hidetoshi Nishijima (38), Ai Kato (27), and Miho Shiraishi (31).

Kimutaku to star in new romance series
Tue, March 2, 2010 (1:46am EST)
Fuji TV's next Monday night drama will star the popular Takuya Kimura (37). Although several of his dramas during the past decade have had elements of romance, this one is being described as the first one centered on a love story since "Beautiful Life" in 2000.

The new drama, which is currently untitled, has Kimura playing a company president for the first time in his acting career. However, Fuji TV has chosen not to reveal any other details right now, so the network seems to be holding back for a big announcement about the drama in the near future.

The series is expected to start in April, but a May premiere seems to also be a possibility.

Mirei Kiritani stars in "Jotei" sequel

TV Asahi recently announced a new television drama time slot: the "Nichiyo Night Drama" will occupy Sunday nights at 11:00pm. The network has now revealed that the first show lined up for the time slot is "Jotei Kaoruko," featuring model Mirei Kiritani (20) in her first starring role for a TV series.

"Jotei Kaoruko" is yet another live-action adaptation based on a manga by Ryo Kurashina. The original comic is a loose continuation of "Jotei," which was turned into a drama starring Rosa Kato (24) in 2007. Like other Kurashina works such as "Jyouou," the "Jotei" series focuses on the world of hostess clubs.

Kiritani plays a young woman named Saya, who becomes a Ginza hostess after finishing high school. Saya is looking for her mother, whom she has been separated from all her life, while Saya's rival Miki is another young hostess in search of her own father.

"Jotei Kaoruko" will premiere in April.

But wait, there's more, , ,

Kenji Sakaguchi saves Tokyo in drama special

Kenji Sakaguchi (34) will star in a drama special on Fuji TV, tentatively titled "Keiji Narusawa Ryo ~Shuu~." The show is based on a popular series of police novels by author Shunichi Doba (46).

"Shuu" is the title of the sixth novel in the series, and it is said to be the best one. Altogether, the books have sold more than 1.5 million copies.

Described by the media as a Japanese "Die Hard," the drama is a mixture of action and suspense. Sakaguchi plays police detective Ryo Narusawa, fighting a series of terrorist bomb plots, racing against time to stop a mysterious criminal threatening to blow up the entire city of Tokyo.

Sakaguchi's partner is a female cop played by Akiko Yada (31). Also appearing in the drama are Kenichi Endo (48), comedian Gori (37), YOU (45), Susumu Terajima (46), and Naoto Takenaka (53).

Filming starts early next month. The broadcast date has not been decided yet, but Fuji TV plans to air it sometime this year.

Tokiwa stars in "Okaasan no Saigo no Ichinichi"

Takako Tokiwa (37) is taking on the starring role in "Okaasan no Saigo no Ichinichi," a drama special that will be broadcast on TV Asahi. This is her first television role since she got married last October to actor Keishi Nagatsuka (34).

The drama reunites Tokiwa with popular screenwriter Eriko Kitagawa (48). The two worked together previously for the 1993 series "Aishiteru to Itte Kure" and the 2000 series "Beautiful Life." This time, Kitagawa has penned a story about family, involving a terminally ill mother (Mitsuko Baisho, 63) and her daughter (Tokiwa). Isao Hashizume (68) plays the father of the family, while Kotomi Kyono (31) and Kazue Fukiishi (27) play Tokiwa's younger sisters.

TV Asahi plans to broadcast the drama by the end of this year.
