He usually plays a happy-go-lucky character but in this, "conniving obstetrician" is a term I thought I'd never use. |
Nishida Toshiyuki is a such a good actor. I'd recommend you watch the first two Yamada Yoji "Gakko" movies if you want to see Nishida in other serious roles.
The large ensemble cast in Shiroi Kyoto is exceptional. So many veteran actors and actresses--a far cry from the usual dorama being churned out these days.
Shiroi Kyoto is actually a popular story. It was initially a series of novels; prior to this 2003 dorama, there were two previous television dramatizations, plus two theatrical movies; and I think both Taiwanese and Korean television have produced their versions of this story.

Very astute remark.

Haha. Me too. Guess I am an evil person so i felt that humans are mean and that's how they'll react. And i really liked this drama as i could identify with the characters very much. Perhaps because i did have a friendship once that was very much like how it went between Zaizen and the other doctor, can't recall his character name now. Something about their rivalry really strike a chord with me.
gaijinmark wrote: | I wonder what the budget for this was. When they said Zaizen was going to Poland I thought we'd see some standard airport shots, a few interiors giving the impression he went to Poland, but damn, they REALLY went to Poland! |
I think i read somewhere that it was a blockbuster drama to commemorate FujiTv's 45th anniversary. So guess it really had a big budget. Don't know how much though
HHND wrote: | I also wonder the same thing! I was impressed by the filming at the Nazi site, but for some reason I felt like it was somewhat out of the general mood of the drama. |
I think it was a little off but felt that it does tie in wrt the inner battle in Zaizen himself at that point? The dilemmas that he was facing?
And as someone who's interested in WWII stuff, the filming there really was a bonus to me.
HHND wrote: | Does anyone think if it was shortened to ~ 15 episodes it would have been better? The first 11 episodes went by really fast for me, but the trial was kind of dragged out, perhaps because I'm not too interested in lawsuits and stuff like that. Not that the drama overall wasn't great. I couldn't watch anything after watching SK for like a week (happens when I really like some drama) |
imho, the story wasn't draggy AT ALL. perhaps because i like watching the lawsuit stuff. So really this drama had all the ingredients necessary to get me hooked from start to finish. A very realistic drama and solid acting. Impressive!!!

Interesting. I guess the Germans felt more commfortable with how the Japanese would handle the subject.
Actually it is not overly surprising when one thinks about it. _________________
