Is the liteon a PC drive or a standalone player for your television?
BTW (I guess it's my fault - since I started this whole copying/dvd off topic a while back)..is there anyway to have all of this moved to a new thread with a more relevant topic? I feel bad for having hijacked this thread. |
the liteon is a standalone player for the tele.
im sure geezer doesn't mind that we hijack his thread..
btw, i haven't been watching proof of man thats been airing on ktsf.. i always forget its on. _________________

theres 2 versions of the firmware, 1 that was released by liteon, and another released by a french hack group.
i flashed my liteon with the official liteon release, and files that couldn't play before, play now. also the visual quality is better. as for soft subs, i couldn't get that to work.
im trying to flash it with the french firmware, but im having a hard time rolling the firmware back. i've read that some people that used the french firmware were able to get soft subtitles to work.
anyways, although liteon has discontinued firmware releases for our liteon, the player is still a good buy. | hey amurayu, did you remember where you read that? and if you do get the softsub to work, let me know, plz? i've got a mega-ton of JPN/Koren movies with softsubs and i can't get it to work with my philips.
as far as the liteon, it is a good buy......IF it is on the market, which it isn't anymore. _________________

What specifically is the problem? Do you have the 642?
To activate soft subs you need to go to the file menu (the one on the left of the remote - can't remember the exact name) and the scroll down to the sub file you want to use. Then press the subtitle button. you should see a note on top saying subtitle file loaded (or something to that effect). The sub file should look like a cartoon caption for the player to recognize it as a valid sub file.
Also make sure you have the latest firmware for your machine.
If you're using advanced subs (ex. Dust Off subs) you need to edit them to view properly on the phillips player since they don't currently support the advanced formatting he includes on his subs.

Hmmm. I'm confused cause I'm not sure what menu you're referring to.
On your remote choose the "disc menu" (should be 5th button down on left).
With a disc inserted the TV should go to "DATA CD MENU". In this menu, you should see a list of all files on the CD/DVD. Move the arrows up/down until you get to the subtitle file you would like to view (a picture to the left of the filename should be like a cartoon caption image with "----" inside). press the subtitle button and on the top of the screen you should see "DIVX subtitle selected" now move the arrow to the movie file (should have an mpeg4 icon to the left of it) and press play or "ok".
This should begin to play the divx file using the selected subtitle file you selected.
It should support .sub .srt and .smi subtitle files (though advanced formatting in subtitle files will come out strange since it won't know how to handle advanced formatting.
Here's the main support page:
http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?ctn=DVP642/37&scy=&slg=ENG&tmplt=&SearchTxt=DVP642&grp=&cat=&sct=
on the left choose software to download the latest firmware (clicking the link will open a page that opens a PDF with instructions etc...
The latest revision is: 0531
here's how you can identify which version you have on your system:
1. Take note of your set model number on the white-label at the back of the set.
2. Press OPEN/CLOSE to open the disc tray.
3. Press 5 6 9 OK button on the remote control.
4. The software version (VERxxxx) and model (6xx/xx) will appear at the top of the TV screen.
Hope this helps.

Incidentally, this is how you get into the hidden menu to hack your region code so BE CAREFUL. I believe while the software version, etc...is being displayed the number you press on the remote represents the region to define your player. So if you accidentally press 2 or 3 (and don't pay attention) you may end up making your DVD player a region 2 or 3 player. You can always go back using this same hack to get back in and change it back...but if you don't know the exact key strokes (or forget)...you may have a hard time changing it back.

Elton,
Okay, let's see:
"Welcome to the High Plains" will end its run on Saturday, September 25.
On the following two Saturdays, Oct. 2nd and Oct. 9th KTSF will air the movie; "Tomb of the Wild Chrysanthemum" at 8pm
(Hopefully a new series will begin on Saturday, Oct. 16.)
Right now, on Sunday nights, KTSF is running the mystery series; "Proof of the Man" (without subtitles)
But they are going to show a movie titled; "Night Train to the Stars" (with subtitles) in two parts on Sunday Oct 17 and Sunday Oct. 24. at 8:30 pm.
On those two dates, "Proof of the Man" will be on, but it won't start until 11pm. (It normally starts at 10:10pm)
And by the way... those start times, 8:30 pm, 11:00pm --- since it's KTSF that's all sort of relative. The guys at KTSF are not sticklers for starting their shows when they say they're gonna start them.

It turns out, they showed the show, late night on September 11th, because they knew they were gonna be preempted by the Jewish Telethon on Sunday the 12th.
Damn. And due to copyright laws, they can't run it again. So if you missed it (as I did) you're s--- out of luck. |
FYI...I don't know if you go to the newsgroups or not...but "Proof of the Man" Ep.3 is available on alt.binaries.multimedia.japanese (Chinese subtitles).
It was posted on 8/17 so depending on your newsgroup server it may/may not still be there (though you could probably request someone to repost it if it's not there anymore).

I like it. And if it ever comes out with English subs... I'll buy it. But it's a mystery, and I'm missing too many of the clues, plot points, and relationships. |
I know what you mean. I have a difficult time understanding what's going on without subs. I used to try to watch an episode first (and cover the subs) and then re-watch it with the subs to see how much I understood. I think it helped me to get a little...but I don't have time now to watch things twice.

Hey! There's been movement at the
http://www.fuji-tv.com/us/index.html
web site for Saturday night, English subtitled, Japanese shows on KTSF.
Not much movement.
Not really helpful movement.
But movement.
Now, instead of announcing that "Song of the Sugar Cane Field" will be on, they have an announcement for the movie ("...Wild Chrysanthemum") that will be running over the next two Saturdays.
They've also updated their game show announcement, mentioning that "Food for the Brain" (which has been on for about 6 six weeks) is on, and is hosted by Shiro Ito.
Of course, they still think "My Little Chef" is runnign at 8pm...
Okay. Not really exciting stuff. But it's a sign of life.
So I'll repeat what the guy who maintains the site told me in an email.
Email the site.
Let the guys in Japan, who supply KTSF with English Subtitled programming, know that someone is actually looking at that site, and watching their shows.
This isn't a call to arms.
I'm just saying that if you want these guys to care about what you want to see... you have to let them know you're out here.
The email address is:
