Yeah, I liked the beginning of "Last Christmas". Then again, I'd just finished watching "Rhythm and Police" which I thought was fantastic, so I went into the show as a newly minted fan of Yuji Oda's. And Nana Katase's in the show... so there's no way to lose.
|
Hehehe, glad you enjoyed it. It gets better and better as it goes along too! Although Nana doesn't really get too big a role in the first 2 eps at least. Akiko is really cute though

Boy, there are a couple of different specials that are gonna be shown on KTSF on Christmas, and New Years. During the week I'll try to confirm the schedule.
The most interesting (to me) is "Princess Hiro".
http://jdorama.com/drama.794.htm
I've already seen this one, and I think it's worth watching again.
Interesting story, well told, and very well acted by an amazing cast.
Anyone who hasn't seen it yet, I highly recommend it.
I believe it's on on the first of January, from 9 to 11. But I'll have to check because the schedule on Sunday nights is put up in Japanese and I can't read it. So I'm guessing about the day and time. _________________ Manga is to Literature

Wow that does look like a good cast. I will have to check it out. _________________

I think they're showing it down here in SoCal as well... Time to get the VHS tapes ready...

I'd say get it, if they show it down there. (If not, give me a holler.) It's a really interesting look at a piece of Japanese/Chinese history that I knew very little about.
And the thing that kind of surprised me is the take they had on who the real villians of the piece were.
Takenouchi and Tokiwa are the stars... it's their love story... and I thought they did a great job.
But in terms of history, and setting... the Japanese Army is the villian of the piece. I had expected some spin, you know? Some of the old... the Japanese Army and the Higher Ups were just trying to liberate China.
Not this time.
I imagine the Japanese Right Wingers (the ones who are now saying the "Rape of Nanking" never happened) didn't think much of this show.
Okay, any more and this will turn into a spoiler, and I hate spoilers. _________________ Manga is to Literature

Yes, Mr. Geezer, one thing about the Japanese productions like Princess Hiro and Hojo Tokimune -- they go to great lengths to present an actual view, those from other ethnicities speaking their own language, etc. And, let's not forget that these productions have proved themselves as objective in their presentations. Song of the Canefields was another one.
Also, you know that one of those who brought "the rape of Nanking" to the forefront, author Iris Chang (whose novel actually called The Rape of Nanking made her well-known), apparently committed suicide this past November, yes? Very talented individual. May she rest in peace.

That's like in Song of s Sugarcane Field where the army is the villain...

Speaking of that book, I was saddened to hear that Iris Chang committed suicide... It was speculated that her research on Nanking took its toll on her psychologically...

Her works live on though.
I dunno if it was the actual research related to The Rape of Nanking that led to Chang's condition, as she was doing research in the Phillipines when actually suffered an initial breakdown, from what I understand. Then she came back to the States and that's when she committed suicide. Then, again, these things take time to formulate, so, who knows the onset. It's a condition that can quickly get a hold of you, take its toll; not to state that Chang didn't make an effort, but (and not to sound preachy here, as I'm sure you'll agree), there's absolutely no shame in getting help for psychoses if one needs it. Spread the word.
By the way, you guys have that show called Song of the Sugarcane Fields? In Hawai'i, KIKU-TV has the title as Song of the Canefields (flows better, no?).

They played that movie last year in SoCal around the holiday season... I did manage to tape it and burn a DVD for it...

It's of the exact same quality as my capture of Song of the Canefields (dust off even mentioned that my capture was DVD-like). I'll more likely post both parts 1 and 2 on ABMJ before the end of 2004. From there, someone can P2P it to death. |
I've completed posting parts 1 and 2 on abmj. And I'm right now seeding it on FSS. So if anyone has access to FSS, get it while you can! And no, I have not intention of seeding it on D-Addicts.

Just to clear this up.
KTSF will be showing the first part of "Princess Hiro" at:
9 am (that's 9 in the morning, folks) on Saturday the first of January.
9 to 11. Part one.
When they'll be showing part two is a mystery known only to the folks at KTSF right now, and they ain't talkin'.
And yes, according to the adds, Princess Hiro will be shown with English Subtitles.
TakKiLover
As to what will replace " Shinsengumi"... I don't have a clue.
KTSF showed episode 46 on Saturday. So if the show is the usual 49 episodes long, "Shinsengumi" will be running through January. KTSF always makes a habit of cutting the last episode of the Taiga Dramas in half so that they can stretch an extra week out of it.
If they stick to form, they won't announce "Shinsengumi's" replacement for another 3 weeks. _________________ Manga is to Literature

Still trying to get caught up with the holiday schedule.
On Friday, Dec. 31, KTSF will air:
"The 55th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen" from 3pm to 6 pm. And then return to the show from 8 pm to 10 pm.
On Saturday, Jan. 1st, KTSF will air:
"Princess Hiro" (with English subtitles) from 9 am to 11 am. I have an email in to TTV to find out when Part Two of "Princess Hiro" will air, but so far I haven't gotten a reply. If anyone knows, feel free to let us know.
Also, on Saturday, Jan 1, KTSF will air a movie"
"Night Train" (with English subtitles) from 2 pm to 5:30 pm.
The Movie stars:
Yukiyo Toake,
Kumiko Akiyoshi,
Hisako Manda
Kenichi Hagiwara,
Masahiko Tsugawa,
Tetsuro Tanba....
I don't know anything about the movie, but it looks kind of old and weepy to me. It's a costume melo-drama written by the same person who wrote "KAI".
According to the Yahoo TV listings, the regular Saturday night schedule will go uninterrupted:
8:00pm Kochira Hon-Ikegami Sho
9:00pm Koi Seyo Otome
9:30pm Shinsengumi! _________________ Manga is to Literature

Okay! Sometimes it's just good to pester people.
According to F. Lee at KTSF, the schedule for "Princess Hiro" is:
1/1/05 Saturday part 1 (9 am -11 am)
1/9/05 Sunday part 2 (11pm-Midnight)
1/16/05 Sunday part 3 (11pm-Midnight)
1/23/05 Sunday part 4 (11pm-Midnight)
1/30/05 Sunday part 5 (11pm-Midnight)
As far as finding out what's coming next, or trying to influence what they'll show on KTSF on Saturday Nights, the email address I've been told to use by the Management at KTSF, and by the Advertising group that sponsors the Saturday Night (subtitled) programming is:
[email protected]
I haven't found this address to be responsive, but it's the one they tell me to use. So I say, feel free to use it. Let them know they have an audience out here, and that we'd like to see some better shows. They can do better than 3 full seasons of Ikagami Sho, and a double helping of Kai.
They also offer a phone number for Fuji TV, if anyone's interested. It's:
650-344-3006
I've never called the number myself, but as I say... they put it out there. _________________ Manga is to Literature
