Just wanted to know if anyone here knows of any japanese live-action movies having a girls-with-guns concept, kind-a-like the anime Noir. Rolling eyes

The closest I can think of that I've seen is "Pistol Opera" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0285906/ ), since it has a female assassin (Esumi Makiko). I like Esumi Makiko a lot, but I thought the movie was pretty awful. Anyway, it's not really an action movie, it's very static, like a play. The director, Suzuki Seijun, did a really cool movie "Tokyo Nagaremono" in the 60's. Since I'd seen that, I had really high hopes for Pistol Opera, but I was really disappointed, it just wasn't for me.

I've also heard of "Gun Crazy", but haven't seen it.
(But BMW has a review here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374688/ Smile )

How 'bout the J-film that RULES ('specially that lighthouse gunfight scene) in this "J-females with guns" topic, Battle Royale (see http://www.battleroyalefilm.net/)?

From the "'don't hit me, just mentioning it' Dept.": the 1999 S. Korean film that put the S. Korean thriller on the map, Shiri [http://www.koreanfilm.org/kfilm99.html#swiri], features THE single most lethal gun wielding-female Asia-based assassin (enough description for ya's or what??? Chatter) in the character of N. Korean operative Bang-hee Lee/Myung-hyun Lee (as played by the underrated Yoon-jin Kim, whose English is better than, even, Atsuro Watabe's).

thanks guys. Guncrazy loks pretty good but there no english subtitles right, still only R2. I think I've seen one version of Zero woman on WOWOW channel - pretty nice lead actress but there's not really much of a story. BR, i've already seen so I guess i'll have a go at Pistol Opera and Shiri.

Btw. i really wish they offer guncrazywith english subs. Each episode is self-contained right? I'm assuming it is since each ep has a different lead actress...

Actually, if you check eBay, the seller named cannibal-king has Gun Crazy Episodes 1 and 2 available with English subs (a fansub) and region free.....

Yokatta ne! Yeah, you'll see. Bang-hee Lee's wetworks is efficient, yet brutal, no f*&% around gunplay (I'm even uncomfortable using the word "play" in the same sentence as her, heh).

I recommend you pass on it. Really, unless you are a film student or in the mood for some bizarre "art" don't go for it. The acting is really bizarre ... in a bad way.

Girls with guns are awesome! Have you read Gunsmith Cats (the manga) distributed by Dark Horse Comics or seen the anime Gunslinger Girls? Both of those are WAAAAAAAYYYY better than Noir can ever hope to be. Gunsmith Cats is probably the best example of guns with girls done with style and intelligence that I have ever seen in any medium.

Waits for BMWracer to chime in with Gun Crazy Mr Green

Catch you later,
Id

Hmm, can't say that I've heard of either, but I'll take your word on it, Id. But I think Arnel wanted live-action recommendations... Smile

Aside from the Gun Crazy series, which I've only seen one episode, I'd recommend two excellent non-Japanese "Girls with Guns" movies: La Femme Nikita and The Long Kiss Goodnight... Both movies are kick-ass and better than Gun Crazy (gulp!), mainly because of the bigger budgets involved.... Smile

If you like Naoko Iijima (Wedding Planner, Bus Stop), you have to see "Zero Woman: Final Mission". You really get to see a lot of her.

There Reona Hazuki in Black Angel (Kuro no tenshi). Available in domestic U.S.A release. I actually know the guy that she married for like 4 months. He was pretty pissed with that.
Those anime mentioned are good, Gunslinger Girl ranks as one of the best recent anime I have seen. It's as much an emotional story as it is action, actually probably more so.
I have the video tape of a classic genre definer from back somtime in 80's I think. I don't remember the exact title, but literaly translated was something like Machine Guns and Saillor Uniforms. It was fairly recently reissued on DVD (reg 2 Japan only).

Congrats!! Is is widescreen though? Geezer said it was fullscreen. Bleah.

I dunno. Should I buy yet another copy? I've got last year's eBay bootleg (with English subs) and the legit Japanese Pioneer version... Oh, to be obsessed and stupid! Rolling eyes hehe
