lol @ "Adam Sandler" being funny.
Adam Sandler is the most contrived, "funny man" in history. His comedy is juvenile and an insult to the intelligence of most people with a semblance of intelligence. But, that seems to be the theme and commonplace of "American wit" for most people under 30 these days...
You want Japanese comedy, jump on Mechaike. Or, more specifically... Okamura Takashi...
THAT is a funny man. _________________

He is that.
| Quote: | thats his character in most movies
this guy is actually a genious
any comedian has to have smarts |
any comedian does not have to have smarts... there are many that do not.
| Quote: | anyways why is it so hard for people to understand
that he plays a character
and yeah in real life he's a lot more humble |
Bull**** he's humble... I met him in Tower Records in 1999 and he was the most arrogant prick.
| Quote: | but he can still get goofy
he's been in many movies where he doesn't have that
typical voice we all know adam sandler has |
as a character... whichEVER character, he isn't a very good actor and he isn't funny.
| Quote: | like bullet proof, that wasn't even a comedy
lets see here, punch drunk love
he wasn't crazy in that movie
and airheads his first flick
he plays a character |
In EVERY movie he plays a character. What's your point? and Why are you rambling?
| Quote: | does anyone know what it means to
play a character
the guy doesn't have witty humor, or even situational humor
his humor is potty humor, and sometimes physical
and it obviously works for him |
and I'm saying it's a load of crap that people that enjoy "loads of crap" (not scatologically) cling to.
| Quote: | if he has his own production studio
the two toughest critics roger and ebert say he's one of the funniest |
I'm not either and so what if he has a studio? What does him having a studio have to do with his juvenile humor?
| Quote: | magazines praise him
not only that
he also writes his own songs and scripts
and he makes millions for every movies he's in
oh yeah 50 first dates i know all the women loved
and he wasn't annoying in that one or in the wedding singer
thats because he played a different character in those movies
so maybe you shouldn't be bashing the actor
maybe people should know what a character is
again to make it clear
he's not the same character in every movie
don't criticize someone or something you have no idea about |
I don't think you should tell me what not to bash after that garbled, wandering rant above...which was a bitch of a format to read anyway
I've met the man...
and he was a PRICK.
I don't think he's funny... not even remotely. All his money thrown in my face won't change a damn thing. I don't care what he owns, who he bones, or who masturbates to his movies... I don't care if they're paid off, laid off, or cloned to agree with "praise" of his films.
He is NOT funny.
So, you like him... ok cool. You want a battle of the condescending... I'm really bored and have an hour to kill. _________________

You come to J-dorama with your "lucky 7" posts and rip on Japan's humor with a "WHO'S BIGGER THAN ADAM SANDLER" rant...
as if you're here to enlighten Japan with your knowledge of that... man.
and you expect people to embrace your ideology?
nuh uh...
some people here may dance around with your lame comments... but I'm not one of them. _________________

I like the 70's through 90's comedians. Of this bunch, my favorites are Sam Kinison, Jerry Seinfeld, Cheech & Chong, Steve Martin, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Linda Poundstone, and David Brenner. In Hawaii, I used to go to the Comedy Club at the Ilikai Hotel almost every week during the 80's and up to the mid 90's. Today's comedy -- overall it just isn't that funny to me.
Getting into Japanese comedy... The stand-up comedian network in Japan is quite interesting and different from American comedy. For example, most Japanese comedy are skit-based, very similar to British skits you see on Monty Python or Benny Hill. Therefore, comedy groups are more popular in Japan than one-man stage performances.
Also, Japan has a strong mentoring program in the comedian industry, where interns learning to be comedians literally sell themselves to the mentors as servants. Just like most things in Japan, young people actually go to comedian school to learn various skills like overall stage presentation and content development. Then after school, they go back to the comedy companies and perform servant-like tasks like shining shoes, purchase bentos down the street, and literally brown-nose the mentors. All of this is so that, once a month, the mentors will give the interns envelopes filled with money. In one documentary I watched, the interns sometime have to beg for money envelopes, which may seem demeaning to most Americans.
One other thing about the Japanese comedy industry... Unlike the U.S., most comedy companies are owned by large Japanese corporations. So for example an electronics company has a electronics division, as well as a comedy division. It's totally strange to people outside of Japan.
Hope this sheds some light on the subject...

LOL! Good luck visiting another culture with that attitude, bub. Here's a big hint: learn to be more accepting and tolerant of different opinions. You think Adam Sandler is funny, some other people don't. No big deal. Life goes on.

Just peeking around the door here.....Mr.Sandler is not funny for me but may well be funny for someone else.
For me..Ellen Generes is funny because she is witty and can also be silly.
There is someone with the name of Bonny??? She is funny and writes her stuff.
Now...I don't speak Japanese..but I watch a lot of Japanese shows and I laugh my head off with the funny guys..and swoon with romance with the sexy guys. All I can say is that Humour and Sexy don't need translations..and thank goodness for that.

Agreed. As I mentioned before, that's the typical "comedy" coming from SNL alumni lately: the big, lovable ( ) doofus. Will Ferrell is currently vying for that position...
Bleah.

Haven't caught that one yet, but I believe you. And he can do the drama/action thing as well, if you've seen Musashi.

A HUGE LOL @ this thread But I'm gonna make a huge useless post anyway!
The title "why is comedy so rare in the japanese entertainment" made me think "HUH?". It's almost as if the person who started this post thinks Japanese don't like comedies and don't like to laugh that much. Maybe it's the title that threw me off, but the rest of the post didn't really ring a bell in my head either to what the actual point of this was exactly. But, I'll quote and try to pick it apart:
| Moteru wrote: | my girlfriend didn't even know who Adam Sandler was
he is by far the biggest comedian in America
i mean men and women worship this guy
my girlfriend told me that there are not a lot of comedy in Japan
and so did a few other of my Japanese friends
i mean not knowing who Adam Sandler is a huge thing
i feel seriously sorry and bad if anyone doesn't know who he is
i guess i'm going to have to spread the wealth when i go over there
i have like everyone of his movies
is there a reason comedy isn't a big thing in Japan
or is it popular and i just got a few peoples opinions |
You just said "Adam Sandler is by far the biggest comedian in America" and "not knowing who Adam Sandler is is a huge thing". Firstly, that is your opinion and I don't exactly agree with that Secondly, that's JAPAN, this is AMERICA. Although a lot of American entertainment is well-known in Japan, it wouldn't shock me if many Japanese didn't know who he or other people are. American entertainment is not their only source of entertainment. Many don't know ALL of our celebs, just like the average joe in America doesn't know who Akashiya Sanma is, for example, although I think he's a funny Japanese guy. I also wouldn't assume that all Japanese don't know who Adam Sandler is or whoever else's name that may be thrown out And, if most Japanese don't know who he is, not knowing who Adam Sandler doesn't back up a claim that comedies are rare in Japan.
But, a few friends of yours who are Japanese said "there are not a lot of comedies in Japan", so they represent the whole country and know all? All of the funny shows I saw were really murder mysteries? Maybe they were referring to a specific type of comedy? Sitcoms with laughtracks (besides American shows and HR)? Japan has comedies..I studied there, I watched TV there, I've watched movies there. I think maybe someone said this here, but some countries' entertainment may have a different sense of humor than others are used to. For me, I love the "British" sense of humor, which some people call "dry", like Monty Python and etc. But I also love the Japanese comedies like London Boots, as The Man mentioned. My taste varies a lot in general. I also worship George Carlin, Dave Chappelle, Bernie Mac, and Margaret Cho, for some names.
Here in the U.S., in my opinion, we have mixture of comedy types and a lot to choose from. I also happen to like, not necessarily love, some of the American comedians who didn't get rave reviews in this thread, and some people's favorites, I don't like. However, I'm not here getting defensive about it because we all have our own opinions and tastes. I see others' points about why they dislike someone/something although I may disagree.
I think I must be PMS'ing. WTF was I supposed to be talking about again?
