Don't you know for a fact that the great leaders have near-zero libidoes??

Yoshitsune is just getting started.
The "Hero" has just left home to begin his journey.
I don't know if this writing staff, this cast is gonna create something special... but for me, this form is always a slow starter.
Not Taiga necessarily. But the literary form of the Hero's Mythic Journey.
This is the stuff Joe Campbell was always talking about on PBS.
As for the Taiga's themselves... Yoshitsune included...
I love the way they are telling me the story of Japan.
The first one I watched was Aoi Tokugawa which focused on the first 3 generations of the Tokugawa Shoganate. A fascinating look at the consolidation of total power. And a clear explaination of why Japan found itself totally cut off from the rest of the world until the middle of the 19th Century.
The next was Hojo Tokimune. The story of the ruler of Japan at the time of the Great Mongol Invasion Fleet. Basically the story of the Kamakura Shoganate.
Then Toshie and Matsu, which gave me a much better understanding who Tokugawa was, and how he came to power. And it also showed me who Nobunaga and Hideoshi were, and their relationship to Ieasu.
Musashi, more an adventure story, showed me what was going on in the country while all the court weeling and dealing was going on in the establishment of the Tokugawa Shoganate.
Shinsengumi looked at the tragic, final days of the Tokugawa Shoganate.
And now we're back to Yoshitsune, which is likely to spend a lot of time talking about how Minamoto Yoritomo (Yoshitsune's big brother) took over much of Japan.
And as a result brought the Hojo to power, creating Kamakura. Which of course, sheds new light on what I saw in Hojo Tokimune
All the stories just sort of swirl around, each new one shedding new light on what I saw in the older ones.
I think it's a great way to learn the story of, to get perspective on, another culture.
And for me, the best part is it gives me something to look for when I go to the library or the book store. _________________ Manga is to Literature

Problem is Geez, that it's apparently not factual... I haven't read anything that implicates Musashi to the Tokugawas or the Yagyus... The time period is correct, but their interactions don't appear to be...

BMW,
His (Musashi's) interaction is probably ficitional. In fact, I'd be amazed if he had any contact with the "great" leaders of his time.
But it's a look at the country, outside the palaces and castles, during that period.
It's like Toshie and Matsu. Toshie, though important, really wasn't a big player on the National or Historical stage. Historically, the guys to look at were Nobunaga, Hiedeoshi (sp?), and Tokugawa.
Focusing on Toshie and Matsu is just sort of a literary device. They allow you a touch stone. A perspective for looking at the three great men, without simply running down their history the way they would in an encyclopedia.
Oh, and as to pure historical fact... "Shinsengumi" was one of the purset spin jobs I've ever seen. _________________ Manga is to Literature

Agreed. From that standpoint as a colorful historical travelogue, it's great... All of 'em are in that respect.

I didn't hang around to find out, but I'm not surprised...

I'll admit there are slow spots as the story continues to progress. Keep in mind there will be a battle pitting the Genji and the Heike against each other.
As an aside, I also enjoy the quiz show afterwards.
