I've watched random stuff with no subs, but the only full drama I've watched raw was Ace wo Nerae. That wasn't too bad, since it was mostly students talking so there wasn't anything too complicated.

wow, I didn't think so many people watched without the subs on. That helps explain to me some of the people that came to our store. I'm glad that people are so into the Jdramas. When I was actively studying japanese as well I used to jot down words I didn't know or references I didn't understand in a little notebook and looked them up later. I would do that by drama, so when the word came up again, I'd remember the scenario in which it was used. This is really useful in not only dramas..but when you're reading manga or watching anime as well.

I don't watch dorama without subs but I do watch variety shows without them.

I do the same. I figure I'll never see it if I wait for it to be subbed, so I bought a few dramas without subs and watched them. I can't understand nor speak Japanese but I enjoyed the dramas anyway. Sounds dumb but I didn't mind.

Well, for the newer dramas (currently on-air ones), I'll be forced to watch the unsubbed ones since they are released faster. But given a choice, I'll choose the subbed versions... cos my Japanese is still too awful!

Like what the others said, for some dramas, their dialogues would be easy to understand. Yet for others, I find it very hard to even understand half of what they're saying... mainly due to technical terms, dialects, or sometimes, my mind just freeze and refuse to comprehend Japanese...

Btw, I've realized something weird happening to me... prob. due to watching too many doramas, so much so that now, even when I'm watching normal (english) shows, I'll sub-consciously start to read the subtitles whenever there is one! Any of you out there have this... erm, "mutation"

i have yet to watch a drama without subs, since i want to know whats going on and it'll spoil the scenes if and when an english sub became available.

I do it since Fuji TV won't subtitle and I now have no problems renting doramas with no subtitles. In fact, Bara no Jujika, which I rented from a store, ranks as my favorite all-time dorama because I can understand the spoken language!

I didn't (still don't) speak Japanese. But I sure do speak TV. And I didn't have much trouble understanding what was going on. I missed the fine points, and a lot of the jokes... but I got the plots and the relationships. And I liked them.

These days, after watching a few dozen series with English subs here and around the web, I force myself to try to wait until I find a copy with subs. It's just more fun when you get all the jokes.

That said... if there's a show out there, staring someone I really like, and I can't find a copy with subs... I'll still go out and buy a raw copy.

Case in point... of the 5 Nakatani Miki series I own, only two of them have subs. But that didn't stop me from enjoying "Keizoku", "R-17", and "Top Lady". And if any of them ever come out with subs, I'll buy them, and get to enjoy the shows again on a whole new level.

I'll watch something without subs if there is no better quality version out and/or there are no subtitled versions available. My Japanese is nowhere near 100%, so I must have my remote in hand for rewinding and a dictionary in my lap ;___; It really does help with your comprehension and increases vocab! I can do enough to get the jist of the show. But when idioms and figures of speech come along that I don't know, I will be confused I usually end up asking for help when I really get stuck if I can reach any of my nihonjin friends online.

Geezer: There is a version of Keizoku w/ subs floating around. Quality is not top notch like DVD or anything, but it's really good considering how old it is and that it's a VHS capture

I don't mind watching the series without subtitle, but it is really tempting to just doze off cuz you don't understand half of what they are saying. But I definately will watch if there are hot guys and a strong cast in it!

Ill watch some dramas without subs but I cant watch the trick series without subs cause they have all those hidden puns and crap like that... Way to complicated for me to translate, rather have someone do it already...

for me, it depends on what genre of series. for mindless fun like sailor moon Live, i really prefer raws. but for the series with substance such as summer snow, beautiful life, then yeah subs are cool too, but not really a nessecity...

i agree that it depends upon the genre, not because they follow a predictable theme but because it would be easier to put up with the small things that would totally fly [whooosh] over my head

Speaking of which, "Ai suru tame ni Aisaretai" will air around here next week with subtitles included, so maybe I'll be better able to judge it if I can understand everything they're doing. Maybe it's not really as bad as you guys put it on the review page.

I watch dorama's without subtitles. I usually understand most of it, but if I don't I pull out my handy dandy pocket translator (they're pretty cheap now) or I ask my mom but the translator is easier because it knows way more english, haha.

But "Keizoku" is sort of a cheat when I say I watched it without subs.

After I'd bought the copy and watched it once, I found a site on the web where some guy actually transcribed the entire show. Not a synopsis. He wrote out the scenes as if he were writing the original script for the show, and he translated every line into English. It's fantastic.

I printed the whole thing out, and when I watch the show, I do so with the binder bound copy of the script in my lap. If I had the first idea how to put subtitles on a show, I could do it for Kiezoku from this script.

Man, I wish there were more fans nutty enough to put in all the time and effort it must have taken to do the Keizsoku site.

I'm with you on shows like Trick.

That's why having the script for Keizoku is so important to me.

Both shows are done by the same writer/director/production team. Same kinds of puns, twists, jokes, and insider goofyness.

The only difference is that Trick gets to be a little bit goofier because they are going after con men, while the characters in Keizoku are going after murderers and serial killers.

But it's the same sense of humor behind both shows.
