But all kidding aside, Al Davis cast a pretty large shadow across the history of professional football.
shin2 has been doing a Mt. Rushmore of each NFL team. If you did a Mt. Rushmore of the NFL alone, George Halas and Pete Rozelle would be locks but there would be a lot of people to consider for the other two slots and Al Davis would be on the short list.

The irony is that Al Davis was, both prior and subsequent to the AFL/NFL merger, the NFL's greatest adversary.
His "scorched earth" policy towards the NFL while commissioner of the AFL hastened the merger. But he himself was adamantly opposed to a merger and, in fact, resigned as commissioner when he discovered the AFL owners had gone behind his back to make a deal with the NFL. Afterwards he became a constant thorn in the side of the NFL suits with his renegade behavior and numerous lawsuits.
Yeah, Davis would be on the short list, along with imo Lamar Hunt, Paul Brown, Vince Lombardi, Sid Gillman, and Ed Sabol. Hmm, no players?--add John Unitas.
A Southern California boy (La Puente High School, Mt. Sac JC) who made good. The QB who formerly held the record for most career passing yardage--Damon Allen--is also a Southern California product (Lincoln High in San Diego, Cal State Fullerton).

shin2 Nice article. The author should have mentioned another California kid (Hart High in Newhall, Cal) Joe Kapp. The only quarterback to play in a Rose Bowl, Grey Cup, and Super Bowl.
