Wow, they actually had her on a magazine like that? I wonder how much exposure she's gotten in the states since her latest album. Thanks for the scan!

ok, as promised here's the article.

Imagine watching your mother bop around the house to Dr. Dre's gangsta-rap classic The Chronic. Well, one girl's embarrassing nightmare is another girl's muse. "My mom is really funky!" insists singer Utada, crediting her mom's moves as an inspiration. Utada--who grew up in New York and Tokyo-- has been putting out pop albums in Japan since age 16. Now 21 and a megastar overseas, she's ready to give our market a shot with her English-language (and U.S.) debut, Exodus. The diverse disc swings from cheery tunes (check out first single "Easy Breezy") to slick, gotta dance grooves like "Wonder 'Bout," one of three tracks produced by Timbaland. Utada got behind the board for several of her own tracks too. "You don't have to be Moby to use machines." she says. There aren't enough girls who [produce]." The sound she and Tim crafted is fresh and different, just like Utada's attitude... not to mention her celebrity crush: Conan O'Brien. "I really think highly of humor." she says. "and he doesn't make insensitive jokes about things like Britney busting her knee." So Utada's totally talented, thinks it's more important to be funny than fabulous and isn't a hater? This girl is, as her mom would probably call her, the bomb! -Zena Burns.

whew, that was tiring! anyway, is it only in this article that she is called only "Utada" or is it in the U.S. market?

Here's the latest news that I got from the J-ENT news thread:

Quote:
Singer-songwriter Utada Hikaru (22) is to provide the theme song for the upcoming movie "Haru no Yuki" (Spring Snow). Scheduled for general release on October 29, the film will feature "Be My Last," Utada's first new release in 17 months. The romance stars two of the hottest young names of the moment, Takeuchi Yuko (25) and Tsumabuki Satoshi (24) and is sure to be a big hit. The main reason Utada took on the job of writing the song was that the movie is based on a novel by the late Mishima Yukio, of whom she's a big fan. The only movie theme she's done to date was for "Casshern," the debut by her husband, Kiriya Kazuaki (38).

I'm pretty sure this song is going to be a ballad due to the nature of the story. I can't wait! w00t!

yeah i kinda like hikki utada. i bought exodus and i like it.

i was in tower records in osaka last year when on a screen there was hikaru san talking about her album in english. i said to my friend 'wow her english is superb' then my friend explained that hikki had lived in america for a while.

i'll invest in some of her japanese albums soon.

I heard some of it and I think it sucks. Sorry.

I like Hikki and all, but I don't think her place is in the American music main stream industry. She should stay true to her Japanese roots because I think she was most productive there.

i wouldn't say it was really good but i do like it. there is a japanese feel to the music.

i can imagine myself listening to it while driving round tokyo(or should that be osaka!) at night.

plus in the easy breezy vid hikaru is driving a 246 dino ferrari. my kinda girl!!

Hm yeah, I've heard of all the songs in Exodus from my friend's album. And from what I heard, she said the songs aren't all that great, but they grew on her. So I guess if you listen to her album long enough, you'll grow fond of it. I think the reason why Exodus didn't sell so well is because the beats to the songs aren't to the Americans' taste. They have a Japanese vibe to them. Sweat

hotel lobby my fave from exodus. i think the u.s. market is probably one of the hardest to crack anyway. plenty of british bands have tried and failed so i'm not surprised if hikki chan doesn't succeed.

demo ganbatte kudasai! Victory! Peace!

Cool, this must be the one that hit No. 1 for her. The first in a year and a half, I believe.
