Yeah, it's been off and on like that for a while... Earlier today, my screen wasn't updating very well, but now it's okay...

yesterday I was optimising the database further and was installing caching software. I had to restart the apache server several times so it might of had something to do with your pages not loading because your request would of been lost during the restart.

The db optimising went in ok but the caching did not, I might try installing it again once I've figured out why it didn't work. I'd installed this on the other server where inheavysyrup is and its working very well.

Once again, Ruroshin's avatar summarizes the pain and suffering he and everyone else is experiencing...

ok successfully installed mmcache, it's surpose to cache compiled php in memory.

Let me know if you notice any performance difference (better, worse or no difference?)

I've noticed it too and its seems to spike every now and then and its really huge when it does but I can't seem to track down whats causing it. There is a pretty high level of traffic to the server sometimes but not unusually high enough to be an attack.

This problem seems to be fairly recent as well...hrm.

If its an abnormally high traffic, able to check the IP? Could be search engine spiders, as JDorama.com has ALOT of pages that could be indexed.

Noted that when it happens, the server almost does not respond.

hrm its only happened in the last couple of weeks the spiders would of been working since you join wouldn't it?

I have another server with no other website on it other than the d-addicts tracker. Do you want to move to it?

AMD Athlon XP 3200+
512 MB DDR-RAM

current load on it is 0.03 0.02 0.00. It was the home for inheavysyrup.com until that had to shut down so now its barely being used. Anyway, if you're interested in moving let me know.

6:30PM right now and the site is laboring again... Noticed that having a second browser window seems to help a bit with the download speed... Coincidence? Head Scratch

The fact of the matter is that JDorama.com is on a server sitting in a hostile infrastructure. With the trend that the World Wide Web is heading, it's not going to get any better... There are some really dumb *ss idiots out there that think flooding web sites is all in fun. If not targeting the server directly, these hackers targeting the NOC's infrastructure is more likely -- especially because Ruroshin can't determine, based on his logs and such, where the lag is coming from. If I were a hacker (and, actually, I am a professional hacker, but working for the good guys) I'd attack the NOC's routers and firewalls... For the amount of work I'd be wasting in the process, I can bring down many more servers than just picking on a particular server. But that's just me! Smile

Ruroshin can only do so much on a OSI layer-3 basis (TCP/IP) seeing he only has control of the server itself... What's REALLY needed is a better NOC infrastruture at the co-lo... Robust router and/or hardware-based firewall with DoS defense features. At my company (we're an ISP), we host hundreds of individual servers in our NOC... And we don't have any of these DoS or related issues because we've got them protected by a combination of Cisco 7000 series routers, Cisco PIX 535 firewall units, wrapped with QoS and multiple peering in place. Most of these under-$100/month shops really don't have this level of hardware and services in place. The only line of defense is on the operating system level of the server itself. Of course, co-lo at my company is $500+ a month, so there's also a huge cost factor in having these services.

I'm not trying to put a damper on anything or anyone here... What I'm trying to do here is basically give everyone the big picture where you cannot get $500+ quality for under $100 prices. I, too, am frustrated with the overall performance issues at peek time, but at the same time I also realize the technical factors that allows these sort of incidents to occur.

Is that an accurate assessment, Ruroshin?
