LOL, man BMW, you must be having a field day man... Crazy All these people are posting spoilers hehe

Anyway, I'm glad that I chose to forego Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Party Rolling eyes for this great movie. It was really sad though, which is why I don't really enjoy seeing war movies on a whole (I love them, but you just feel so empty in the end... Sad ) The only thing was, Odagiri Jo hardly had a part, and Moriyama Ryoko was just in the beginning. Though, she did a beautiful job on the show's theme, as was to be expected. Also, is it just me, or do the Japanese LOVE to use that ploy where the child had pneumonia as a child, and the mom has to RUN with the kid on her back to the hospital? Sweat

Eh, aside from this, it was a wonderful family drama, with some solid characters, though due to time constraints, a lot of compromises were made in fleshing out the characters. I'm sure it would have benefited from being made into a mini series. As someone else mentioned, the father was a great character, he was very optimistic and brought a lot of human warmth to a very grim premise, kinda makes you remember not to take things for granted.

Catch you later,
Id

I really enjoyed the movie because I'm a person that likes to take a lot of pictures, just like the father did. The special effects were really cheesy though.

It was hard for me to balance my time because at the same time, the KBS Drama Awards were on KXLA Ch. 44. I like Korean drama also and was alternating back and forth.

oh man I know how you feel! The comercials were soooooo long. They even played the same comercial twice during one comercial block. They were so long that I actually got discouraged from finishing it. Did you see the 10 min list of sponsors in the beginning?

Yeah, they do the huge sponsor list thing every year. I remember being surprised the first time I saw it, now its expected.

If I'm not mistaken, they had fewer commercial breaks than normal, albeit longer. So it doesn't matter so much. Watch 22 minutes of movie then 8 for commercials, or 11 minutes of movie followed by 4 minutes of commercials.

As for me, I got a book in the mail that morning, so I was reading that during the commercials.

I didn't mind the special effects, low tech as they were, but I'm not critical of such things. I wasn't expecting a great budget. I will say that the mixing in of actual wartime footage with the movie was great though.

That seems to be true for even the regular programming: the first commercial break is short, then the next two are five minutes or more... It turns out that the show is only about 45 minutes, and the rest is left for commercials, unfortunately. Sad

I decided to tape this show since I was out on New Year's Eve. I really enjoyed it. I thought the acting performance by the dad and Hitomi Kuroki were excellent.

Ooops! You misunderstood me: I didn't say that this special was only 45 minutes, but that regular programming was about 45 minutes... Sorry for the confusion...

Heh, that would've been really bizarre to have a 3-hour show with only 45 minutes of actual program material... hehe hehe

Wow, this was an excellent movie!!!! I was almost sobbing at the end. Such a wonderful storyline. This is the first time I've watched anything with a Japanese perspective to WWII.

I'll try to edit Song of the Canefields this weekend, then maybe finally learn how to create a XviD movie for a change, now that I have a disc player that can actually play that format. Bleah

Have you ever seen Grave of the Fireflies? That'll put a lump in your throat.

Well, one bummer thing (sorry for filling this thread Beaten ) is that it does not play OGG audio (or probably OGM video for that matter). There are a few AVI files I have that have DivX or XviD video mixed in with OGG audio. So before trying anything out on the player, I must check it using gspot beforehand. Now I need to figure out how to re-rip the audio portion to MP3...

How immensely true, a friend of mine borrowed my Special Edition DVD (I watched the Special Bonus disc first so I would avoid having to revisit the material AFTER I had seen the movie cause I knew this one was going to tear my heart out and spit on it) and then he moved and took the disc with him. He also had my copy of Spirtited Away, Berserk, Noir, my N64 with Majora's Mask, my Strokes CD, and Chrono Cross. I've been in tears ever since... Cry

Aside from that, yes, this movie was some amazing labor of love, it's easily ONE OF THE MOST TRAGIC movies ever, anime or live action. It's funny how in Japanese war films, the enemy all along was the un-understanding, selfish ways of the Japanese. Broke my heart to see that farmer beat up Seita, and seeing Seita's struggle to keep Setsuko happy will break any he-man's will if he had even half the heart of a normal man. If anybody here is a father with a little girl, I'm sure you'd bawl your eyes out if you ever saw this...

And I recommend everyone to see this, just don't think you'd be around to watch it when you share it with your friends and family after. Wink

Catch you later,

Seems like a minor bump in the road. With all those freakin' video and audio formats floating around, you can't possibly expect a DVD player to cover all those bases... But it appears that the LCD2002 is very close.

Oh man, I'm really really close to pullin' the trigger on this player now... Big Grin

True that. I've got the SE DVD along with the other Studio Ghibli R1 releases. Great great stuff. Applaud Though they're "only" anime, the stories are more heartfelt and deep than most stuff that comes out of Hollywood... live action or animated. Big Grin
