Watanabe Ken and Yakusho Koji are both in this? This may be a Blockbuster DVD thing for me.
Without really pushing this train way off the track, I'm not certain if NHK made Sakura without an intention of it at least airing in Hawai'i. I believe it was supposed to commemorate some Hawai'i-Japan relationship.
I think Sakura aired on some American channels. But if it were NHK's intention to commemorate the relationship between Hawaii and Japan, it sure blew it with this series, an absolute insult to Japanese-Americans, especially Japanese-Americans from Hawaii. I wrote about it on another thread, but let me just repeat: one central point this series tried to make was that when WWII broke out, Japanese-Americans were torn in their loyalties between Japan and the U.S. The family in this series is supposedly from Hawaii, and on several occasions proclaimed how the grandfather, who was born in Hawaii, agonized over his divided loyalties. This is absolute, total b.s.! Hawaii-Nisei were unilaterally loyal to the United States and large numbers of them enlisted in the local 100th Battalion which eventually merged with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team: all-Nisei army units (well, the officers, at least in the beginning, were white) which had an unparalleled battle record during WWII. For NHK to put on a series which tells a blatant lie is inexcusable. My family immigrated to Hawaii from Japan in the early 1900's; my grandparents, parents, aunts, and uncles lived through Pearl Harbor and WWII; I have relatives who served with the 100/442; I know about the history of Nikkei in Hawaii because my family is/was part of it; so I get so upset whenever I think of what this series tries to inaccurately push as "fact." BTW, I know of no Hawaii-Japanese who speak English with a British accent, and I know of no Hawaii-sansei who speak English with a thick Japanese accent, unless they are kibei. Sorry for the length of this rant.

the 442nd is the most decorated military unit in the history of the United States.

I guess I never realized the depth of the sensitivity that the Hawaiian-Japanese-American issue was in the NHK Sakura TV series. Just like me people want their history to be represented in an accurate and honorable manner in their TV series and films. Writers' poetic license sure is annoying, isn't it? [/i]

rightfully so...i've mentioned this previously....but like in the WWII submarine film U-571...the movie represents that the Americans were the first to undertake the daring mission to capture a German U-boat in order to seize a German Engima encoding machine so the Allies could break the German communication cypher....the Brits were the ones who did it first and at the cost of lives....
when the film came out i think British Naval veterans were rightfully hot under the collar.
