Wonder why Chinese actors are more popular though..

It's not that... It's narrow-minded casting by the movie producers.

I did see this movie and I liked it. I was puzzeled about the fact that there were Chinese actresses instead of Japanese actresses....however I thought Hastumomo was played by a Japanese actress (maybe i am wrong)

bingo...it would have been nice to see Japanese actresses playing the main parts, but you gotta be honest, the 3 chinese actresses were pretty good. ^^

i love the japanese kid that played chiyo, she's really pretty.^^

to me its kind of an insult to say that all asians look alike, people say once you see one asian you've seen all of them...its so sad coz we don't all look alike...Sad

I saw the movie yesterday, and I must say I expected more of it. It was a shame that they all talked english (only sometimes a japanese word like "arigatou", which I tought was pretty rediculous). Ofcourse I expected this because of the Chinese actors. Nevertheless it was a nice story, but maybe the movie didn't had to be over 2 hours. And as it was produced by Spielberg, the filming and background were all amazing and realistic. Again, if only the actors would have talked Japanese, this movie would have had a bigger impact on me. But then again, many people who aren't interested in Japan may prefer English..

I think it was geared to a more "english speaking" audience =\ Zhang Ziyi was great as well as that other girl (i forget her name).

I actually disagree. I think that the directors wanted to use "famous" actors to go for popularity. And currently, there are more popular Chinese actors than japanese ones. I think it was an okay decision to use Chinese people. The movie wasn't used to negatively portray japanese people anyways, despite many the many japanese people and chinese people that hate each other.

One thing people need to undeerstand is that this came from a book. I actually read the book and the movie is almost exactly right from it. Of course they had to take things out. But it was still as close to the book as you can get. And when you read the book the author says clearly that it is a fictional piece and does not reflect the true life that geishas had

I've said it before - they should have used Japanese actresses. There's no shortage of talented and beautiful Japanese actresses, and i'm sure at least some speak English. It's just that they are not well known outside Japan Sad

That's one of the reasons why it was narrow-minded...

Though there was quite a bit of criticism leveled towards Tom Cruise when he did The Last Samurai, at least his cast was legitimately Japanese as it should have been...
