Ratingwise, past few years have been very weak.

Best ratings in (kind of) recent years is probably Fall '97 with "Love Generation" 30.1% and 5 other series between 17~20% in average ratings.

Yeah, even the autumn one is not that good, also none of the dramas past 20% in average ratings.

Could it be related with shifting habits ---> thanks to DVDs, Digital Video Recorders, downloads, Youtube and streaming the viewer is in control of his time and doesn�Lt need to follow a show on a specific day at a specific time?

Are the dramas produced to be especially appealing to one specific target group to optimise product placement? Or are they just lacking good scripts with mass appeal?

Also maybe the average Japanese viewer has seen it all - and prefers other formats?

Ratings are still relatively high though, here in Europe, channels can only dream about 15% quote for a TV series.
