NPR Staffer Marshall Terry Eats One Of The World's Hottest Peppers (VIDEO)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yw984sDocaU

In the video, you nearly feel the pain of the poor sap who willingly sampled what could be the world's hottest pepper. NPR affiliate WFAE profiled Rock Hill, South Carolina resident Ed Currie about his quest to grow a super hot pepper. Currie is waiting to hear back from Guinness World Records on if his pepper is hotter than the Trinidad Scorpion "Butch T" from Australia, currently holding the title for world's hottest pepper. Staffer Marshall Terry agreed to sample Currie's tiny red vegetable of terror and we're guessing he regrets his decision. He vomits, hallucinates, has trouble talking and seems generally confused about his surroundings.

WTF? I haven't tried that pepper (obviously) but capsaicin is not a pyschoactive substance...I think this dude just had a mental breakdown b/c that thing was too hot and the symptoms overloaded his ass.

Seriously. Well said!

The dude next to him just had a slice if I remember correctly. He seemed to be coping a bit better, sans hallucinations.

Having only been there once before shortly after it opened, I decided to go to Ramen Yamadaya in Torrance. I wasn't terribly enthusiastic about it then but I was enticed to go back considering they've since expanded to Culver City with two locations on the way in Costa Mesa & Westwood, all within the span of a year!

Showed up a few minutes before opening and there was a gaggle of ppl waiting outside which promptly filled up the small dining space.

Ordered the tonkotsu ramen with what turned out to be a mammoth piece of buta kakuni (pork belly) added as an extra topping which I requested.

It was better than I remember it, which probably has a lot to do with the fact they've had several months to work on the broth.

The chashu is still whatever and the pork belly while generous wasn't jaw dropping but hearty and definitely filling . I did enjoy the broth which they let you accent with fresh, raw garlic gloves that you can add to the broth yourself as everyone gets a few cloves and a garlic press.

I'll say that I like it better than Shinsengumi Hakata Ramen but I still prefer places like Ramen Mottainai or Santouka Ramen. Moreover, compared to my recent trip to Nidaime Tsujita on Sawtelle this place is not on the same level. The broth and chashu absolutely destroy Yamada, albeit at a higher price (might have something to do with the rent in West L.A.!)

As they might say in Japanese: "Junen hayai" <ten years too early>...so as to say...this place needs "another ten years of experience" before it can compete with Tsujita.

The staff is really nice and attentive and the ramen is good, above average, but not spectacular...

Gettin' spoiled already....

I don't think the writer of that article or the eater of that pepper have ever tried real hallucinogens. hehe

Apparently it's really popular. Like I said it's better than I last remember it, so I can see why it has a strong following.

Then again, after I left I went to Mitsuwa to pick up some groceries and there was a long line of people waiting to order ramen from Santouka. The food court was packed.

Yeah, the food court is always busy...

Santouka's ramen is okay, but I thought the saltiness of their ramen overpowered the flavor, compared to Mottainai and California.

I only get the Toroniku Shio becuse the meat is so tender (pork cheek) but yeah I would agree it is saltier than the other two. Ramen California is by far the least salty of the three.

The Toroniku is so incredibly tender though, it literally does melt in your mouth and is definitely better than 95 percent of the chashu out there...as much as I love Mottainai (because of the miso ramen) their chashu is "meh," and pales in comparison.

It's like said before, a lot of these places do one or two aspects of the ramen really good but it's hard to find one place that does it all really really well. In any case choice is good so I'm not complaining. Smile
