stay away from office gossip. get along with people and do your job and you'll be all right. ask questions if you're not sure about something. relax and focus on the job and use your head while you're doing your work and you'll be fine.

i've hard part time jobs, temp jobs, and regular jobs. this is the best way to work, from my experience. good luck! you'll do fine.

i will definitely remember that!!
thanks for the advice n reminder!!!

I would add that make sure they're responsible mistakes . . . after all, that "part-time job" can act as a good or bad reference depending on the impression you end up giving, to be honest about it.

In my experience . . . sometimes you're given assignments or projects or missions where, on purpose or otherwise, you don't have the corporate (or other type of establishment -- government, education, military, WHATever) knowledge or experience to satisfactorily complete the task at hand.

In those cases . . . ALWAYS ask questions. Look over the material first so that you have good questions . . . but never leave things to chance. The boss may sound like s/he's confident when s/he's giving you the work, but may mean something else entirely. Ask questions. Formulate it with a "OK, if I do it this way ___________, is THAT what you want as the end product?"

I mean, you may have great grades and all (again, this is with regard to my own experience, buhahahahahhaha, OK, OK, I know, I know, "shaddup, braggart) but, the aforementioned in true whenever you begin a job.

After all . . . in such cases, we become "freshmen" all over again. Wink

P.S. STAY AWAY from the office gossip. For me this was easy . . . someone just started talking about another person and, you know what, I just played stupid, like "oh, yeah . . . oh, yeah, haha . . . yeah." And, I've never had to bother with it since. They might very well be talkin' 'bout me (which I kinda' doubt as folks in my dept. and other parts of the company "LIKE ME, THEY REALLY LIKE ME!!!" [with apologies to Sally Field]), but at least I don't have to engage IN the gossip.

thanks for sharing ur experience...
and i will definitely stay away from office gossip!!!!

Hi, first time posting here for me, i stumbled on this board a half year ago or so when i started teaching myself japanese and thought it might be a good place to ask the following:

What is the chance of someone like myself (canadian born, native english speaker, with some basic japanese) getting any sort of job in japan starting roughly summer next year. I think i could handle some sort of english teaching job, or something in that field, but as i understand it, most of these places require a BA or BS. Being canadian, i can obtain a 1 year working holiday visa and i'm wondering if they just require the BA because they'll only sponsor your visa that way?

Basically, a friend and i are hoping to take off to japan for a year and i wouldn't be able to survive very long without working.

Any help is much appreciated, even if it's just linking me to somewhere that can better answer this.

thanks!

Welcome to the boards!

Try japan-zone.com... I think there was an ad or something to this regard...

My cousin who has a BSEE had two two-year stints in Japan teaching English in Japan and she thoroughly enjoyed it...

Good luck! Big Grin

That's a handy link BMW! I don't think I've been to that site before. I've spent sometime looking for jobs in Japan myself..but seriously doubt it will happen now. It'd be hard for me to find a job in my field, and with my expectations...

Heck, my cousin went to Japan to teach English after college... and decided to live there. Smile

He came back here to go to business school, but then moved back to Japan. Of course, since he's Japanese, it makes fitting in a little easier.

My cousin is one of those restless sorts, so she got tired of living with this Japanese family after two years, so she came back home...

Now she's living in Geneva, Switzerland for the next two years... Smile

That'd be fun. I'd dig Switzerland for the outdoorsy stuff.

How appropriate this thread resurfaced now. Today they offered "The Buyout" it basically amounts to volunteering to leave the company, but, you get about 6 months severance and you have access to our internal job site should anything open up (not likely). I'm seriously considering it for a couple of reasons:
    1) A guy from corporate offices was out here about 2 weeks ago and basically told us that no matter what, this office WILL be closed by the end of the year.
      2) We're union, the contract is up April 1st (what a coincidence!) and it's about a 99% chance there's going to be a strike. Given the current job climate, I don't think the unions going to get much sympathy. I tried explaining that to them but they live in their own fantasy world.
Anyway, we got till the end of the week to decide. It's a pretty sweet offer, could be the summer of Mark!! w00t!
