Excellent!!!!!! Watched it twice already!

Was kind of surprised that Saburo wasn't the last singer (like he has been for every year). But then again, I'm not that surprised. He's getting old. But he's still the $h*t!

Ayu blowed goats. (Sorry Ayu fans)

Amuro was great!

Gotta love those two comedians.................... "Nandedarou? Nandedarou?" hehe -that $h*t never gets old!

That's one thing that I didn't like about Kohaku this time--combining performances and this one in particular really bothered me. Yeah, she sang with BEGIN and another female whose name I don't remember. When they combine performances, everybody got to sing for about 1 minute and then the next performer got their turn.

I really would have liked longer individual performances. Rimi has such a sweet voice and it's really too bad.

the other female singer happened to be moriyama ryoko.. and she wrote nada sou sou.. she's also moriyama naotaro's mother.. Mr Green

By the way...did anybody notice that BoA and Ayumi Hamasaki were sitting next to eachother?

When they announced the Artist of the Year Award (I think that's what it was called)....BoA didn't look all that thrilled when Ayumi won. They didn't hug or anything. BoA just started clapping unemotionally. I believe BoA was nominated for this award. Both seemed cold to eachother. Also...I heard Ayumi and Nami Amuro don't get along. Is this true?

Also...BoA is Korean right? Her Japanese is really good. I thought she could just sing in Japanese...I didn't know she understood and could speak Japanese.

I like all three Applaud

Yes BoA is Korean and she has been trained to speak and sing in Korean, Japanese, English and Mandarin at the age of 10. She's a well oiled shiny pop machine Big Grin

Well I finally got to watch the whole Kouhaku and I gotta admit the guys did so much better than the gals this year. I even liked all the enka stuff which I usually don't.

I wished Rimi would of gotten a solo performance though, I much prefer to listen to her alone than with the group.

It still baffles me just how popular that SMAP seikai song is but great performances from the rest of white all round. Applaud

BoA! My fave!! I got so pissed when I missed the first 5 mins of the Live telecast and sat through the rest of the 4 hours thinking she would appear, only to know the next day that she was the first to perform......

well, SMAP's sekai ni hitotsu dake no hana is a very very meaningful song that touches lotsa people. i guess that is one of the very good reason why that is so popular

For those who are interested, I found a site that shows photos of all the participants who competed the 54th NHK Kouhaku Red & White competition.

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/hochi/geinou/others/kohaku/2003/

A list of songs that were sung, sorted by the order they were played and what teams they were in, can be found here:

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/hochi/geinou/others/kohaku/2003/20031231kohaku.htm

Both sites are in Japanese. To translate, go to this web site:

http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/web/

Paste the URL into the text box, select the "p" option, then click the orange highlighted button.

Enjoy!

Really looking forward to this event, hopefully it'll be a bit more even this year rather than the landslide victory last year.

On a related note, does anybody else think that this year of jpop has been rather weak compared to last year?

I don't know about JPOP, but enka had a great 2004!!!! There were a hell of a lot more female enka CD releases this year than the males. I hope Ishihara Junko will be back this year... I really like her!!!!!

Here's someone's prediction list http://www1.plala.or.jp/nakaatsu/04kyokujunyosou.htm

Looks reasonable. The numbers in bracket is how many times they've appeared on the Kouhaku before or if its their first time.

Personally I think 2004 is an upgrade to 2003. I've been finding much more songs I've liked this year compared to years past but it's still not where it once was.

Not sure if it'll be more even this year as the really big seller and by a landslide is Hirai Ken, followed by Mr. Children so if they both make appearances then the males could possibly just take it. Well here are the top 5 songs of this year thus far according to Studio Oto:

Hirai Ken - Hitomi wo tojite
Mr. Children - Sign
Hirahara Ayaka - Jupiter
Shibasaki Kou - Katachi Aru Mono
Orange Range - Locolotion
