Not too long ago, I was sharing a room with several friends. One who was studying Japanese said she was doing bad and couldn't speak that much. When she was very drunk, all she spoke was in Japanese and very good.

Has anyone experienced this oddity before?

Interesting... I really think there are mental "roadblocks" that we place in the thinking portions of our brains that prevent us from performing certain mental exercises. Tony Robbins's workshops are based on this idea. And, possibly alcohol eliminates these roadblocks. So in your friend's case, her roadblock may be her own conscience, or her confidence over her Japanese speaking abilities.

On a related note... I was speaking to a Japanese woman a couple of weeks ago. Her native language is Japanese, and she learned English when she was in her teens. However, when she dreams in her sleep, all the conversations are in English, including her mom who doesn't even speak English. Get a load of that!!!!! Google

I'm worse at Japanese when I'm drunk, but I might say more interesting, albeit limited, things hehe

I actually speak better Japanese when I'm drunk. Don't know why but I assume it has something to do with what Groink had posted above. My pronounciation is actually a lot better too. Not tainted with as much "English accent" as it would be if I were sober. Heh, and when I was staying in Japan, after an almost all nighter drinking bout with her father, I passed out and she said I was speaking Japanese in my sleep. Beaten
Weird? Very (IMO)

She said she was speaking English in her dreams... She wasn't talking in her sleep for others to hear. I find this interesting because through the years I've asked many multi-lingual people the same question, and virtually all of them say they're speaking their native dialect when they dream. But for her to dream that her non-English speaking mom is speaking English is even more strange! I guess it's true that our subconscience minds create 100-percent of the dreams we develop.

BTW, when I dream of Noriko-chan in my sleep, I'M DOING ALL THE TALKING!!!!!!!! hehe

I hear many people claim to be able to communicate better when drunk with others of different languages.

because you aren't as hung up on syntax technicalities and you're generally more uninhibited.

...or it could be the fact that you and your "foreign party" are all so damn smashed that you're all saying a whole lot of drunken nonsense and swear you're making sense.

Ha ha ha ha ha!!
I think that's true Ushiroyubi-san!! Beaten
I really think people do feel like they are really are saying the right thing when they are drunk, but really they are just sounding like a fool or some thing like that sort.

I'm studying Japanese, but I think it's pretty easy.
So are you studying japanese Ushiroyubi-san?

Well c-ya!!
