PostPosted: Sat Mar 20, 2004 4:04 pm    Post subject: Converting odd wide-screen DivX resolutions to MPEG-2 Reply with quote Back to top

Hey, everyone!

Got a really mind-boggling dilemma... I'm trying to use TMPGEnc to convert a DivX5/MP3 video to MPEG-2 so I can burn to DVD. The resolution right now is 640x360. When you watch it on wide-screen, it looks great. However, when played on a regular TV, the video is squished horizontally. I think this is occuring because MPEG-2 can only display in certain fixed resolutions, such as 720x480 or 480x480. And TMPGEnc only allows you to choose these two resolution settings.

What I'm trying to find is any information on re-ripping the 640x360 DivX file to 720x480 by adding black borders on the top and bottom of the video. Then that way, it'll keep the video ratio to scale. Tried searching dvdrhelp.com for this but came up dry so far.

Thanks!

Well, if you can use the mencoder tool on Linux, then this is pretty easy using the "expand" video filter. I believe the program "transcode" also has this ability but I haven't used it yet.

These are command line tools, and somewhat of a pain in the butt to use, but once you get used to them, they can do a lot.

P.S. You probably already found a solution by now, but google found this recipe for virtualdub:

Every time I convert AVI to MPEG..the files is way much larger and the length is much more than it actually is..lets say its only 25 minutes 200mb, the encoded one would be 1gb and 1hr 15mins long..why is that? I'm using TMPGEnc..I want to get at least ten 25 minutes episode on one DVD disc..is that possible?

Basically a good rule of thumb is for every 100 mb avi there will be a 200 mb mpeg. The reason why it is so big is because of avi is at such a high quality, and by converting to mpeg you try to recreate the avi with lower quality audio/video that is why it is so big. Im not really sure how to make a dvd because i dont have a dvd burner yet Shake Head but from what i heard you can burn like a full dvd in about 45 minutes which means like... alotta episodes... ^_^ hehe

I'm able to convert the files to MPG now, but when I burn them onto CD-R (using Record Now) and put them in my DVD player, it says it can't play the CD, but I watch lots of other VCDs that I buy on my DVD player. Should I try to get a different burning program?

If there's a topic similar to this already, just let me know and I'll delete this one.

I'm wondering if I'm able to copy dramas or variety shows I've downloaded from japan-tv and Public MM onto VCD or DVD and how do I do that? I like watching dramas on my TV in my room better than in the cold nasty computer room so I just wanted to know if anyone knows how to do this. Thank you Mr Green
do what i do.... if u want a VCD use NERO and the files can be .avi (none of this converting to mpg..and waste time crap)... and click on make VCD option.. but when u make VCDs the quality turns to crap.. so i would say if a CDburner is all u have then go for it... but if u have a DVD burner just make a readble DVD...
