Yes, if you select a "custom file size" or "predefined file" size it does 2 passes. If you choose "Target quality" it does 1 pass only.

There is some hidden advance options too, if you press ctrl+f9.

I always do two passes. I figure the extra time to encode will give you a better quality file. At least that's what I believe and I'm sticking to it. hehe

Yeah, I've noticed that my test runs look very close to the original MPEG2 recording.

I've also noticed that the xvid encoding is better quality than the divx encoding. And the resultant xvid image size is larger (512x384) vs. (480x320) for the same file size. Hmm.

Anyone know of FREE or Shareware software, aside from Quicktime Pro, for editing MOV files?

Thanks,
PCM

As I mentioned several posts earlier, check out videohelp.com

If the software exists, they'll most likely have it.

The worst part about mkv is it's not really a codec, but more like a container. It can contains a movie, subs, multiple audio tracks, menus...

You can try AutoGK, I managed to reencode something with a weird codec once. (Something that would piss off okumasama Wink ) If you can play it in media player, you may be able to convert it to avi. Fingers crossed

Folks,
How much RAM does your PC use when encoding/transcoding?

Am looking to order the remaining parts soon to build a replacement PC, want to know how much RAM I'll need to do encoding/transcoding at a fast rate while mulitasking.

Going to order one of those AMD X2 CPU's (multicore), as I want to be able to surf the Internet and IM while encoding/transcoding.

Thanks,
PCM

mine doesn't use very much <100Mb, it's much more CPU and Disk intensive.

could be different for PC's.

Cool, thanks for the info.

What program do you use for encoding/transcoding?

I think with memory prices as they are, I wouldn't put anything less than 1 GB of memory into my machines.

Yah, it's all about number crunching and I/O transfers to the HD... RAM usage is probably minimal, just to support the software....

Okay, here's a techie question:

I'm currently using TMPGEnc DVD Author to author my DVDs and though it works just fine, I find it lacking features... Anyone out there using something different that's more versatile and less cookie cutter?

Thanks! Big Grin
