Why do you even want to do this in the first place?????? Or maybe I'm not reading your question correctly...

To save space. I'm not intersted in the quality. I rather have 2 DVDs instead of 4 VCDs. Or 4 DVDs instead of 11 vcd and so on. I can also lower the bit rate to fit more.

Also, its personal choice. Why are people coverting AVIs to DVD? Why not convert them to VCD since its eaiser. It's all personal choice. My dvd players all play VCDs but I have friends who don't own dvd that play VCDs.

have fun. you're gonna have to rip the vcds on your hdd through mpeg1 (should be that hard)

then, use something like Nero Express to author the dvd (really easy to do)

as a test .. i converted Beautiful Life 01 and 02 into a DVD. work awesome but the subs are bit too low. might have to adjust the resolution.

I already have Nero Express. Thanks for the info. I need to work on them and then test them. I know that a few people have a problem with adjusting the resolution. I burn the LA eps of Sailor Moon and I didn't lower it enough. The subbs are cut off.

i found this guide to be quite helpful, but i'm not sure whether tmpgenc dvd author is free or not. the standard tmpgenc is free but it does not support mpeg-2.

http://www.lordsmurf.com/convert/vcdtodvd/vcdtodvd.htm

personally i prefer not to use cd/dvd burning software to convert movies from one for to another because it was not specifically designed for that. there is also no setting to tweak for optimal quality.

Hi! I'm currently using the program Divx. I find that there are certain files I can't play with this program. Sweat Lately I saw this new program called Xvid. I was wondering:

What's the difference between them?
Which one is better?
Since I have Divx, do I have to uninstall it and then install Xvid?
Is Xvid a higher version of Divx?

Thanks.

divx = xvid (just backwards)

divx started as a hack of mpeg4 codec
-- it went off that and started to develop on its own

xvid - were bunch of people who dislike the direction of divx and created xvid

i heard there was a new divx out and its suppose to be fast fast.

http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/codecs-203-1.htm

-- reviews and tests 3ivx, Divx, xvid, nero recode and some others.

-=-=-=-=- the above information is for ENCODING and creating AVIs =- =-=-

to simply play your files .. you need the specific codec to play. xvid and divx are not compatible with each other. you neeed divx to play divx avis and xvid to play xvid videos.

Just so people don't get the wrong idea, dixv and xvid are video codecs. Windows Media Player is...well a player, a player still needs codecs to play the video. It is likely WMP downloads the divx or xvid codec when it is upgraded/updated so you can view all your divx/xvid videos.

avi is just a container and so is ogm. For example both avi and ogm can be containers for an xvid encoded video. Ogm is a bit more advanced than avi because it can store multiple audio streams and multiple subtitles.

If you don't need to do encoding stuff, try to ffdshow. It plays divx, xvid and a bunch of other formats. I find it's faster on my Celeron466 than the official Divx5 release.

Also I find xvid give better image quality when compared to divx of about the same size. xvid also seems to require less cpu power to decode than divx.

You can download it here http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/11/2/7/11-2-7-13.shtml

Yes, for just decoding or watching divx/xvid stuff, you just need ffdshow installed. I suggest you to uninstall both divx and xvid first and then install ffdshow.

PostPosted: Wed Feb 04, 2004 11:57 pm    Post subject: recoding dramas Reply with quote Back to top

Whenever I d/l a drama via BT, I almost always re-encode to divx at lower bitrates, mostly to save space, especially if it is mpeg. I was wondering if others did the same? I can get almost any movie on a single 700MB cd, and usually 3 45-minute dramas per CD, without too much loss of quality (I realize that's subjective).

I guess some people prefer to watch on the TV, but I prefer to watch on my computer while I do other things. (And have quick access to a japanese dictionary).

So I was wondering if there were other recoders out there?

BTW, I use Linux tools (mencoder/transcode/ogmtools), which get the job done, but aren't necessarily the easiest things to use.

i wish i compressed them - but so many people want to watch them on tv so i convert them from divx 2 mpeg 2 vcd.

after 2 dozen dramas... all the discs take up space, corrupt, or go missing even when they are in cold store.

still havent got around to watching them all [every last disc]

I have 2 Panasonic DVD recorders. I record the current drama "honma Mon" every morning here in Los Angeles on DVD-RAM. After 4 half hour segments I make a playlist eliminating all the commercials and then copy the disc to permanenet DVD-R. The quality is superb so long as the transmission from the TV studio is clear. I did the same for the ending of Churasan and Sakura. Now I'm recording almost the entire series since I enjoy looking at them so much and the cost of DVD-R is only around $1.
I only wish I had done the same for Churasan. There was a web site that sold entire series on tape, but he changed his web site and I was too stupid to record his new site. Now I can't find it. He called himself 'Gojira".
Does anybody know his new web site? Even though the tape quality is pretty bad, I would still like to buy the early chapters of Churasan.
Ralph
