thanks for clearing that out for me... I'm suprised that it happens in many countries, because I've never encountered it before. In my country (Netherlands) I think you would've been "accused" of being gay very quickly. At least it doesn't seem to be a common habit.

But ehm.. how far does this kind of friendship intimacy go? Just to be sure... for example if two straight male friends would give eachother a goodbye kiss I would be hugely shocked Don't get a wrong impression, people being gay is fine with me.... But you know, I have some sort of definition of what is gay and what not, based on the general idea that goes in my country. You'll need to help me adapt to other cultures' views on this I guess..

it's a shame, but in some ways, i thought the netherlands (and europe, in general), would be different. i don't think the avg american male would think too differently from you.

if i saw two guys kiss on the lips, i assume they're gay. that's that.

if i saw two guys kiss on the cheeks (and i mean the ones on your face) and they're european-looking, i assume they're from a country where that is a custom. if i were to ever visit that country, i'd participate in that custom - although i'm sure there'd be a feeling of uneasiness. (the kiss-on-the-lips custom? hell no.)

the other stuff, well, here's some jholic personal observations:

butt-pat: as mentioned before, if it's done with one hand, no cupping, it's fine. try to limit yourself to one or two pats, and don't get too carried away. if it's done with TWO hands, that's a no-no.

the hug: in certain situations, the male-male hug is fine. the most common one you'll see is two males lock a handshake FIRST, then (with hands still between them) give each other a small hug and pat on the back. instances where the emotions may run high, a chest-to-chest manly bear hug with both arms around the other person is still acceptable. both arms and BOTH LEGS around the other person? a no-no.

With respect to the second quote "damn, that girl has some big...", I'd take a slender, yet flat, woman like Kelly Chen, Sammi Cheng, Miriam Yeung, or Joey Yung, any day of the week instead.

i kiss my sisters on the lips, and only occassionally my brothers, (bcs i know that their girlfriends are skeezers, and i dont want those dirty lips near me)
