As a sociology minor I just want to say that:
1. You should try to keep your research around the general area in which you live because of variables that I can't even get into.
2. You're on the right track.
3. Choose your sources and statistics wisley. There's a lot of false info out there believe it or not.
I'll comment more tomorrow. I have to get to the old 2nd job now . _________________ Hello there ^_^

Thanx sooo much Enna, It will help a lot but I also what to know your opinion on this topic. can u share. |
You are welcome lifunk. My opinion on interacial relationships or my opinion on specifically Asian women with non-Asian men?
My opinion on interacial relationships is marry or date whoever makes you happy in life. My opinion on Asian women in relationships with non-Asian men is the same... life is too short..date or marry a person who will bring out the best in you. Simple really.
Did I answer your question lifunk?

I, for one, was not aware that such a practice was occuring.
So, in order for me to accurately give you an opinion (your original post was rather broadly worded) that will relate to your research paper, you'll need to prove at least a few examples of this happening.
Is it widespread?
In America, Japan, Hong Kong?
Are they mail-order brides?
I'd need to know at least that much to give any sort of opinion.

Hmmm that only the Asian women who marry white men can truly answer.
I do know of one couple who are friends of my BIL. The husband is white American and the wife is Filipino. I think he is at least 20 years older than her. Maybe older, not sure. They met through the internet. He went over and met her and her family before they married. Did they marry for love? Who can say? She moved to the USA without knowing anyone. Does he help out financially with her family. Yes he does. They spend at least two months in the Phillipines every year. He stays in a hotel and she stays with her family. They get along very well and seem to love and respect each other. Did she marry for status or did she marry to help her family out financially? Only she can answer that question.
I also know several Japanese women (born and raised in Japan) married to black Americans. Now did they marry for love or did they marry for status? I do know that for one of the women status probably wasn't it, because her father basically disowned her for marrying a black man.
Here are some questions for you to ponder lifunk:
Would her father have felt differently if she had married a white American man? Does status have to do with the the nationality or with the race of the man? What constitutes status? Does an American white man have more status than a British or Australian or German white man for example? Are you researching Asian-American women and American white men? Or Asian women from a variety of Asian countries and white men in general?

Here's something else.
Im asian, my sister is asian. She married a white guy, Norweign ancestry, and 12 years her senior.
We grew up here, are we still asian?
Do I think she married for status? Nope, he's a teacher, and makes a pretty good living, but higher status? No.
And it's a little insulting to have someone think of her as marrying just for status. It may be getting overly personal, but i'd think that you're saying my sister is a gold digger, or a materialistic woman.
but like Enna said, im not an asian woman, but I think my 2 cute nephews is the best answer.

Hey, I am not by any means saying your sister is a gold digger. It's all the statistics. But I don't think it is about money just about who is at the top of the totempole. The stats usually say it's about how the asian women feel the need to be accepted by the white culture. Again I am not the one saying it, It's the research others have done and the stats. _________________

There you go! like that. |
yeah...all kidding aside i wasn't marginalizing your project or the seriousness of your tone but that example may be worthy of discussion given how contemporary it is. as alluded to above, it's a sociological issue that has many variables and otherwise confounding factors that may qualify any thesis you come up with. tracing the antecedents of any such phenomena one may ponder rudyard kipling's notion of the "white man's burden" and how that might play in to the whole perception of such relationships, however ironically...
i don't know the scope your project but i'm just throwing up food for thought.
Go SUPERMAN!!!! who would have thunk it...superman is korean? maybe it's drinking all that soju that gives him his powers....
good luck to you.

As far 'what constitutes status' Usually it is the American white man that decides or that makes up better yet who is highest in the social totempole (obviously they are) and who is the lowest. Because of this is what researchers (not myself but people who research as a profession) believe asian women in the U.S. marry a white man. Because supposedly they are the ones that make the rules. |
@lifunk: Then your research will be on Asian women and American white men? Will you narrow your research down even further as shoujo22 suggested in her first point?

that's why i brought up the notion of "white man's burden" ...this notion that whites have a duty to civilize others and indoctrinate them with the Western ideals that predominate in largely white societies....
